Hello Everyone,

At first, I thought I would share my story with pens, and how I came to be a fountain pen aficionado, but then I thought I would keep this introduction short and leave my story for another day.

I am happy to be a member in this forum, and thanks to Wim, my registeration was faster than I expected, given it is the Holidays and most people are enjoying the good company of loved ones, families and friends.

Once again, thank you Wim, and happy holidays to all.

Regards,

Al-Nasser

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

The story is almost ready, though I am not sure under which section should I actually post it.

Thanks again, and happy writing!

Wherever you decide to post it, I look forward to reading it.

Reading the experience of others with fountain pens broadens my limited perspective.

Whatever fountain pens or inks you use, it will reflect your life experience.

With hopes that you'll enjoy this site as much as I have,

Tom K.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Great to hear from you, sir! I'm hoping to hear your thoughts on nibs for writing Arabic script. Enjoy your time here.

Hello LeakyLandy

I will be honest with you, I haven't tried Arabic calligraphy much before and so I would have limited knowledge to any specific nibs, though I would recommend a broad nib (1.1mm at minimum) to get some line variations which will make your script be more pronounced.

You can google (Arabic calligraphy) which will give you good image examples and videos that might help you out.

Happy Writing

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
