What Cross Fp Is This?

Hi Cross folks! My friend loaned me this fountain pen that his Dad left to him. What model is this? The nib is gold plated steel (attracted by a magnet) and the end of the plastic section end has a "Q" and then a block "4". The section is injected molded plastic but the body and cap feel like turned acrylic resin. What model would this be? Any idea of year?

this is cross solo. no relation to han solo... ;) no idea about the year though, they were entry level pens.

Thanks vikrmbedi! That is very helpful. I've cleaned the pen up. The nib and section come out easily. As I said, the nib is gold plated steel but shines up beautifully and I'm rather surprised by how well the pen writes. I don't expect it has been used in over 20 years.

Quite attractive as well. I didn't know Solos came in this sort of plastic as all the ones I have seen are solid colors. And yes great writers as the nibs were provided by Pilot.

I believe the pen is, more precisely, a Cross Radiance. Those had the double cap ring, whereas the Solo, which was the same pen in different clothing, had a simpler, flat cap ring.

I also believe Pilot provided the whole pen, not just the nib. Pilot has been very competent at making pens that write well to rather rigorous price specifications.

I'm with Parker51. I have a couple of Cross Solos, and every one I've ever seen (in addition to mine) have been solid color with black trim. That being said, I'm quite fond of them -- they are very smooth writers, and at least one of the ones I have is marked "Made in Japan". If they were made by Pilot, as Jerome Tarshis said, that explains the quality in spite of them being relatively inexpensive pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
