Le Man Rhapsody Section

I purchased a Le Man Rhapsody in Blue and the section appears to be from a Le Man 200. It sits just off the barrel with about a 1 mm gap between the barrel and trim ring on the section. I saw from other posts that the Rhapsody section is different in that it has a second trim ring. The section screws into the threads in the plastic section of barrel with no issues, it just stops with that 1 mm gap.

Is there anything to be done to close that gap? Do I need to source a Rhapsody section (if that's even possible)? Or live with a 1 mm gap? The rest of the pen is in great shape and would be a treat sans the section issue.

You are correct, the Man 200 has the ring but its part of the barrel construction.

 

I very much doubt, no you will not, find a ring on its own for sale so there are a few options.

 

Wait for a Rhapsody section to appear for sale on the great auction site or if you know of anyone with a machine shop have a ring turned from brass or even a black acetal plastic.

 

On this matter, many years ago I purchased a Man 200's with a Rhapsody section and it was a while before I realised the issue. I think I sold it like it...my early Man years.

So another option is to search for Man 200 because it (they) might not be what they seem.

I am afraid that is how the Rhapsody comes ( I have two and one from brand new), whereas the more basic 200 does indeed have the "trim ring" as you call it. I find that the gap on the Rhapsody will close tight with an extra turn but is really stiff to unscrew if left for several months.

Dont screw it fully home. We had discussions a few years ago relating to sections being stuck in the barrel. There was some form of reaction between the brass and plastic. I recall one member sending his pen to Waterman for repair because he could not remove the section.

Thanks for the responses. I have several 200's but alas, they all have the 200 section with the ring embedded in the barrel. I hadn't thought of fabricating a ring; thanks for that tip.

I did not know that some of these pens came with a 200 section with associated gap! That's pretty odd as there is a Rhapsody section that does fit. I can't imagine spending that kind of cash for a new pen that would look so unfinished.

Out of curiosity, how is the second ring attached? On the 200 it's inserted into the barrel, but what I've gleaned from other posts is that the Rhapsody section has a floating ring attached to it. Can a Rhapsody owner weigh in on what the ring looks like and how it is attached?

You are of course much more or an authority than me for which I am grateful and always take your advice on all things Waterman. However, many years ago before I found this great resource I worked out that if I left them too long it was indeed VERY difficult to unscrew. In fact, I had to wear rubber washing up gloves to prevent my fingers from slipping. My solution was and still is to unscrew and re screw both my Rhapsodies at least once month. It seems to work for me.

 

It's a shame because they are such gorgeous pens.....works of art in fact.

Long ago I had a stuck section/barrel. Once un-stuck, I added a breath of silicon grease and now, no problem.

 

Got to say it's a beautiful pen.

Regarding the suggestion that the 200 section can be screwed in to the Rhapsody barrel, I don't believe that's possible as the end of the section hits the brass insert in the barrel. That's the reason for the 1 mm gap; the section bottoms out against the brass insert (on mine, at least).

I agree completely with the use of silicone grease on the sections! Especially on sections with a rubber washer as it cures that squeak when assembling. It's the little things...

From memory, it's a loose fit but retained.

While staring at an old Man 200 on my desk I thought of another option.

 

Keep an eye out on the great auction site for an old, possibly damaged, Man 200 or just the barrel.

 

Saw off the brass ring, leaving about 1mm to lap on wet and dry and use it as the spacer.

Funny enough a friend of mine bought a nib unit with such "spare" ring and was hitting the roof since it prevent to fit normally and he could not remove the ring :)

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.  
Preferably EU.
