Design Oriented Pens Suggestions?

The Blue Knight

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking I kind of want a new pen. I have guess a few different sub collection one type I quite like collecting are that pens are just different pens. Ones that fall into this camp are pens like Diplomat Balance, rotring 700, Parker 100 (these are shown below).

I know people rave about the Lamy 2000 (got one on order). But I'm looking for something a bit more different. I thought about the Tombow Havanna however I don't really like the finish it's in. Other then that not many come to mind. I don't really mind if it writes awfully or if it's made by an obscure brand. I don't have budget but under £150 tops.

If you are looking at design icons, The Parker 51 maybe?

Platinum Preppy - a design that allows for cheap, mass production.

Faber Catell Loom or wooden Ondoro

Momento Hawai Zero

Italix Captain's Commission (the cap is beautiful) or the Italix English curate.

I have one of these; don't remember if it was a minor part of a live auction pen lot or my wife stumbled upon it at a flea market...........I had at first thought it some sort of joke until I looked it up.... :yikes: At that price it was not a joke.

It is a very, very fat short pen, and even posted quite short; how ever if one puts one's mind to it, one can write with it.It just takes a bit of getting use too.

Pelikan Twist? Or something like that is too odd looking for me to have thought of.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

Metaxas Stylo? Unusual shape and comes in a wide range of mix and match colours. SBRE Browns review of the grey version shows interesting possibilities:

Design pens are often fall beyond that budget. For me, the Waterman Serenité will remain unmatched, along with the Liaison.

Perhaps you could arrange something with Goldfink?

Edit no, don't think Goldfink will do. Their cheaper model - the Liebling, is 355 euro at the moment

I just got a caran d'ache 849 and already want to sell it. Don't recommend that.

The rotring 600 fountain pen, or something like the rotring 900 (cheaper, but no less high quality - if you look, they can be found for around $80. Mine was NOS and I only paid that, but sometimes they go for 150-200)

Cross spire ($80-100)

Visconti divina (too expensive)

Lamy dialog 3 and imporium (watch endless pens, they can sometimes come within budget around $169-179)

The parker 51 is a design icon. As is the sheaffer statesman snorkel.

At the higher end, I have a number of Porsche Design pens that are design oriented. You might be able to pick up at used pen for $150.

At the low end, I just got a PenBBS (cant remember the model #) that was about $40 and looks like a metal version of the Nakaya Decapod twist (see the Decapod on Nibs.com)

I am sure someone will know the exact model of this pen, but it is very cool looking, has fantastic build quality and is a great writer.

(just now noticed that it says 380 on the cap so that must be the model).

Now I really want to get one of those to pair with my Chalana and kinda get a Laurel and Hardy thing going on.

I ended up getting a White Diplomat Balance C in the end. I was surprised I was able to find one let alone at a reasonable. I'll keep some of the suggestion in mind for the future.

Nice choice! I like the Diplomats that I have very much.

I actually had the same thought when I saw this pen first, though I don't have a chalana either  . Guess I need both now!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

re:Metaxas Stylo..

Lovely pic!!! Having now held the pen, I now appreciate how tactile it is ... and am tempted to also get a titanium version. How does the weight compare with the coloured versions?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
