Circular Scratches - 149 Pen

Recommended Posts

I notice scratches on the circular shape of my 149 pen body (just above the thread). Even though I am very careful when capping or uncapping the pen. It is a (relative) new purchased pen with just one year of use. I would like to know if it is common or if other friends have the same problem.

Could there be a bit of dirt or grit on the inside lip of the cap?

I do not believe it was dust, dirt or particulate matter. The pen is kept clean. I thought the slack in the cap and screw and the relative movement caused the scratches.

My three 149s have these marks. But I am not particularly careful.

Thanks for the answer! I thought the excessive slack were exclusive to my pen. I only have one 149! My other Montblanc is a 145 that doesn't have this problem.

When I received my 149, I thought that the little slack of the cap on the pen was not supposed to be there. The 146 I have does not have it at all, neither have all the other pens I own. I asked the supplier about it, and the answer I received was that it is normal for a 149.

Normal, may well be, but I don't like it. And I do notice some very slight circular scratches to, although I need a magnifying glass to see them.

Theyre absolutely normal and Ive got them on all of my resin pens, particularly pronounced on the 1912.

Its the rubber wearing off on the resin every time you cap your pen.

Every few months/years I just polish/clean them off very effectively with a microfiber cloth and a special compound I got.. they come back eventually however.

I get it on the 1912 if I screw it very tightly but as you say it rubs off easily. Never had it on a 149 though and not sure I understand what the 'slack' issue is.

Thymen, I have a 145 that also does not have this clearance of 149! Thanks for your answer!

Slack? Scratches? I have none of this on four of them.

Uncial, that's great. It may be that your pens have tighter tolerances on the thread. I think of luck by the way.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
