I can't start a new thread here yet, but Amazon.com has some killer deals on M1000s from Europe at the moment, as well. Sub $400.

Be careful! When I searched amazon.com for Pelikan m1000, what showed up was $92.71. However, despite what the title said, the description seemed to be a Pelikan P205. Maybe that is a good price for a P205 (if it is really that), but a huge disappointment if you're expecting an M1000. Amazon global has different terms than US: "

I ordered the -

M600 Vibrant Orange Fountain Pen with EF Nib -

on Nov 28. Arrived yesterday, Dec 2. I paid the $5.00 extra for faster shipping ($10 instead of $5).

Good:

- Correct pen, correct nib, rapid shipping, in perfect condition.

Bad:

- Amazon charged local and state sales tax - $28. They now collect sales tax on everything, even if from a seller that wouldn't charge if you purchased the item directly. I have purchased directly from EU countries and they remove local VAT and don't add Cal. sales tax. Even with the local tax, still a considerably better deal than I could find anywhere else. The high tax amount if a California problem, not an Amazon or seller problem

Alas.....The only things certain are death and taxes..... :)

- Was shipped in a plain cardboard envelope, in a small thin cardboard box that just fit the pen. No packing material, no foam, etc.

My guess is that if I purchased this in the US I would get a fancy and large box designed to show why an expensive pen is worth the price. Since I have too many of these, I would prefer not to have to deal with it. For all I know this is how the pen is sold in the EU.

This is a potential risk that shipping this way could result in a damaged pen. But it arrived perfect, so it's not really fair to complain. In any case the item is covered by Amazon's return policy, so they would make good if it arrived damaged.

just FYI

That incorrectly-listed P205 has been mentioned several times on FPN. And despite several attempts to have it corrected it still remains.

If you buy from amazon.co.uk, not only you get 20% EU VAT off but no US sales tax.

It's been the case for a while now for Australian customers, and we had it much worse, when we were for a long while cut off from anything sold by other Amazon sites than Amazon.com.au. I still (prefer to!) order stuff directly from overseas retailers that don't slap 10% GST on top of the purchase prices in calculating the total amounts due for the sales transactions, but I think it's a bit rough to chalk it out in discussion with others as "bad" that Amazon will charge tax, as opposed to it being proper that Amazon charges tax in accordance with the applicable local regulations, but we'd like to improperly avoid paying tax due our Government on online purchases if we could get away with it.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

  • 4 weeks later...

I had bad experience while buying Pelikan form amazon.com. Those come in a small tube like box instead of Real Pelikan box. Unless those are mentioned "Sold and Shipped by Amazon.com" I am not taking risk. Second important factor was the nib experience.

I found it is way better to order from Europe , the seller will also fine-tune the nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
