Once Upon A Time....free Pen

Recommended Posts

Once upon a time, I was gifted a bag of pens from a generous member of the FPN. I said that, as part of my thanks, I would make some of them available here, so here is the first. Yes...first. There will be more. I hope to do one each week for the next month.

These will all be Esterbrook pens, and I don't have a pecking order, nor do I have them picked out yet. I'm just grabbing a nice looking pen and going with it.

I'll collect names here for the week, and on Sunday, I'll do a randomizer and pick the winner. I'll have to restrict it to US recipients only at this time.

First up - Esterbrook J in Dawn Gray, with a 9556 Firm Fine nib. It's in good shape, with a few scratches on the section, but otherwise nice, with the usual minor signs of age and wear.

Assuming it's in working condition, I'd like to enter. I have a similar pen that I got from my father that I wanted to try, but it didn't work. When I took it in for repairs, they told me it wasn't worth the cost. :( This looks like a chance to get one that I could use, so thanks for the offer!

Not an entrant, but thank you for doing this.

Esterbrook J pens aren't valuable as far as money goes, but I have two in working condition (both red) and I absolutely love them. I love the way they look, the way they feel, the way they write. You've got the added bonus of sentimentality, your Esterbrook belonged to your dad. I'd say that alone makes the pen worth repairing.

Perhaps you can learn to fix your father's Esterbrook yourself. I saw a post yesterday that included a video showing how to take an Esterbrook apart, replace the sac and clean up (or replace) the j-bar that makes the lever work. gweimer1, thank you for hosting this giveaway. But please do not include my name in this drawing as I already have an identical pen. Mine isn't working. But I plan to take my own advice and give a go at repairing it myself.

Not an entrant (EU :( ), but thank you for this "PIF":

Esterbrooks are nice pens, I always wonder how they did that wavy finish to the barrel when I see them.

Tempted... but I've got a green SJ waiting for me to find my small (heat shrink tubing) heat gun so I can get the section off and clean out the crunchy sac.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
