Does Noodler's Blue-Black Smell Like 54Th Massachusetts?

Could anyone who actually has both inks let me know if Noodler's Blue-Black has the same solvent/paint smell that Noodler's 54th Massachusetts does?

Thanks awfully much.

It's a simple question. Surely someone has both inks and can do an olfactory comparison...

Can't help. Never owned Noodler's Blue Black and poured my 54th down the sink despite continued unsuccessful attempts to make it work, consistently, in any pen. Shame. Loved its colour and water fastness.

Good luck on your quest. :)

No, they don't smell the same. I'd say that 54th smells more like anaesthetic than B-B, which to me has a 'sweeter' smell. Personally, I like both inks and as long as I remember to shake the 54th really well before refilling my Boston Safety pen, them I'm fine.

I'll go along with that. :) In any case there is zero notice of phenol or similar compounds.

@ the OP:

I didn't answer because I didn't have an answer. Like Tas, I only have 54th Massachusetts (although unlike Tas, I like it). Not everybody has every ink (not even amberleadavis or Sam Capote). I expect that most people were like me, and only had one of the inks in question at best.

And you're probably lucky that I'm not a moderator, because *I* would have tossed your snide comment about responses out on its ear....

I never asked for it to be deleted. In fact, I specifically asked it be closed/locked. My intention was to avoid a slurry of irrelevant follow-up comments by those who had no answer to the original question (as we see has already happened) while keeping a *brief* answer to the question for others who might wonder the same thing.

One of the greatest injustices foisted upon us as a society is the illusion that everyone has something to contribute and that everybody's perspective and comments are both valid and valuable. As I am fond of telling my undergrads, the pooling of ignorance is not the basis for a good discussion. This is why we listen to people who know and listen quietly when we do not know.

Man or woman walks into a thread they started and it didn't go as well as planned... :D

Darn all those greatest injustices foisted upon us.

On occasion I see men taking private sneaky sniffs of the toilet cleanser at the store, seems an odd smell to get anxious about, but maybe that's just me...

"One of the greatest injustices?" It must be awfully sheltered in the ivory tower of academia. Did you notice that you, yourself, then foisted your own perspective and comments?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
