Pelikan Souveran M420, Worth Getting?

I don't see much activity related to this? It's been out of production for over a decade, but I have an opportunity to get a new old stock unit. What would be a fair price, and is it worth it?

I happen to like the looks of the 450 with the gold vermeil knobs but the 420 with the sterling knobs is also handsome. Indy Pens has them listed as "sold out" but with a price of $350.

Just because a piston fountain pen has been out of production a week.......= 10 years, means nothing. Most of mine are 70-60 years old.

Yes get the pen, you can later put a vintage factory stubbed semi-flex nib in it some day.

I neglected to get one back when it was affordable.......

Do check German Ebay, seller has to take Paypal *** and ship out of Germany, some don't and won't, being Provencal or too cheap to walk. I doubt if it would cost more than E120 if you don't fall into the Buy Now Idiot trap.

Well took a look, none in current German Ebay.de auctions nor in resent past auctions, so it is sort of rare. :(

Depends on how much you want it now, in cost instead of Hunting. If it's back burner, do Hunt in German Ebay.de once a week.

***In the EU we use bank wire instead of checks, so bank wire is cheap in the EU, it would cost $35 to send a bank wire from your US bank to the German bank and take up to a week. That is why the seller needs to take paypal.

I got the last one at Pelikan/Niche Pens quite some time back. 18ct M nib and it's a real belter.

Very worth it if you like the look. I paid $475 many years after they were unavailable. You don't see them often so they are hard to value. I consider the M420, M425, and M430 a trio and the M420 is perhaps the hardest to come by these days.

The M420 & M425 were on sale at RM1,000@$285 in Isetan Kuala Lumpur store a few years back. I have an M420 to match with my M450 and M730. I procured the M420 in mint condition (and still is) years back at about $200. The M420 is a handsome pen to me.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
