Out they go...

We are clearing our Diplomat stock with most items at half price. Stocks are limited and once they are sold we will not be restocking them.

Is there a reason you list the "retail" of the Fisher AG-7 as $130 and your "clearance" price as $65, when the pen has been for sale for years directly from fisher for less than that? Right now it's direct from Fisher for $61. They didn't even charge me that much for a literal one-of-a-kind prototype AG11.

Your "retail" for the cartridges is nearly double what fisher charges too. They've had "send $5.75 to fisher pen company" written on the refills themselves for years.

I dunno. Not many of these prices are really "clearance" worthy.

*EDIT* as others pointed out, I'm a moron and didn't see that they were in Australia. My bad, disregard everything above

They are if you consider the exchange rate between AUD and USD, and the exorbitant mark-up distributors put on anything they import here.

HB, don't get hooked by marketing language. It's not worth it. Simply price compare, including shipping, tax, exchange rate, etc, and move on. I haven't seen a "sale" that I would call a sale in years. Oh well. Marketing is always an attempt to separate buyers from a portion of their earnings in exchange for a product or service. It is a relationship built on that basic tension. Consumers are naturally reluctant and marketers are naturally manipulative. And the world turns.

Yes. Fisher Space Pens have one authorized distributor in Australia and that distributor sets the retail price for Fisher Space Pens. That price is set at more than double US retail and in some cases three times US retail.

If you look at Australian online retailers you'll see that they are all charging exactly the same price for Fisher Space Pens. If they don't, the distributor refuses to supply them.

The situation is the same with Diplomat. In the US, prices for a Diplomat Aero for example range from $USD132 to $USD156 ($AUD194 - $AUD229). The same pen in Australia will cost you $AUD295 ($USD200) no matter where you go.

This is part of the reason we have dropped those two brands.

One of the few downsides of living in Aus is the fact that our geographical distance from the US and Europe (especially) means that products derived from those places tend to cost more to import - and before the advent of international online shopping, it was possible for local distributors to price gouge outrageously and get away with it.

I've noticed the price gap reducing a little in recent years - at least for some brands - as the AUD has weakened and the cost of small parcel shipping (especially from the US) has gone up. But some Australian distributors of American and German fountain pens are still prone to mark up their prices excessively, and Diplomat's / Fisher Space Pen's distributor seems to be one of those.

Sorry totally my bad mate. I didn't notice you were in Australia.

Entirely my fault, edited my post to reflect and I stand corrected, sorry!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
