New Shiny, Historically Irrelevant (bleep) From The Man Who Obviously Hates Fountain Pens

Hi Friends,

Life is busy these days, and while I still love, use and read about pens, I don't get on FPN very often. I do, unfortunately get on eBAY often, and tonight I found this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-LeBOEUF-PILGRIM-COLLECTION-FOUNTAIN-PEN-OCEAN-BLUE-M-NIB/274106208415?hash=item3fd200d09f:g:0ZQAAOSwcDBd1abL

Give you one guess where grey water like this is disgorged from.

I'm not convinced one way or the other about the existence of the Soul, but if such a thing does exist, clearly not everybody has one.

Take care, greg

PS: if you still have a grandma around, give her a call today. She misses you, and you know you don't get in touch often enough.

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

You can look at it from a few different ways:

It is a joke, an expensive joke, but a joke, one that only those of us familiar with Fountain Pens will get,

It is a vanity project to validate a rich persons interest,

It reflects a narrow focus and set of beliefs which might indicate a bit too much concentration on an idea than is prudent,

It indicates that a rather cynical marketer has discovered that many people are rather lazy and stupid and believe whatever they read on the Internet and is hoping to exploit this reality and make a few bucks on it.

In any case, I don't find it soulless at all, but I am also not one who is going to buy one.

I read this thread, and skimmed the two links, and my first inclination was to wonder "Does it have 'a really nice box'?"

That being said, the pen was not too bad looking, and not too horribly priced (no worse than, say, the reincarnation of Esterbrook). As opposed to a Certain Other Brand and their, um, "precious resin"..... So am I missing something here?

Yet another greedy entrepreneur trying to take advantage of a revered and august pen manufacturer's name. The brand name should be allowed to rest in peace.

Guess I am just extra fussy when "that guy" turns his make a buck by slagging nothing-to-do-with-the-original garbage to "my" vintage brand most adored.

Exactly

And, it applies broadly to the other(s) currently doing the same................

Took a couple minutes but found a reference to Harold R about whom I seem to remember a Pen World article mentioning his extensive involvement with fountain pens.

From an article on app.com it sounds like Robert searches and acquires expired trademarks.

So, what you're saying is that my comment about "a really nice box" wasn't so far off the mark after all....

And if you read the negative feedbacks from the Ebay Sellers transactions you will find he didn't always supply ANY box with the pens he delivered!

I seem to remember a Leboeuf pen being advertised in the late 1980,s to 1990s. Mention of a revival was made then also. Seems like dejavu ?

So is the same guy who did the same thing with Conklin, Esterbrook and others?

One guy did the Conklin stuff, IIRC. His son is the Esterbrook and I guess now LeBoeuf guy.

Yes, Conklin (shortly before the sale to Yafa), Mabie Todd, Esterbrook (before sale to Kenro) and some other brands (also cheaply made). Some have improved in quality after he sold the brand to other wholesalers. Now he is trying copies of Leboeuf and Sensa. We shall see.

BTW: The senior Mr. R was a well respected guy in the industry.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
