Hello From Western Montana

Vacumagi

Recommended Posts

Hello, my name is Ed and I am addicted to fountain pens and ink. Greetings from the Bitterroot valley of Montana where it is already just about too cold to order any fountain pen ink online and have it sit in the mail box for any length of time.

I am a retired Navy helicopter pilot, a writer of fiction (mostly short stories), and a semi-retired woodworker and carpenter. I have been lurking here for a while and have taught myself, after some trial and perhaps monumental errors at times, to do the most simple repairs on old fountain pens. I love messing with them and getting them to write after sitting in a drawer for 25-30 years.

Thanks for being the collective body of knowledge and pardon me if I ask any blazingly dumb questions at times. Cheers, Ed

Hello and welcome to this friendly corner of the universe from a fountain pen user in San Diego. There is such a wealth of information waiting for you to discover on this site.

You have a fellow writer and pen person in the frozen north above you in Calgary. He has a very nice blog that you may wish to visit at https://ravensmarch.wordpress.com He's also a FPN member.

Welcome to Fountain Pen Network!

Your dedication to resuscitating ‘sleeping’ older fountain pens is a blessing.

I've long wanted to visit Stevensville in the Bitterroot Valley, in order to enjoy a meal at Mission Bistro.

A close friend since childhood is a distinguished Western Literature professor over in Dillon.

Therefore your neck of the woods is often in my mind.

I hope that you'll enjoy participating in FPN as much as I have.

Happy writing!

Give me a holler if you're ever out this way, we'll get together for a beer or a coffee and I'll show you around Stevi. My wife and I have close friends who were teachers in Southern China for close to 10 years. We did maintenance on their house here, which became a rental property.

Welcome Vacumagi!

First, I would like to thank you for your service to our country. You are appreciated more than you know!

You live in one of my very favorite areas! I get the privilege of traveling to Western Montana occasionally for work - something I always enjoy not just for the amazing scenery, but for the great people!

Thanks so much!

Living in this area has its ups and downs...but doesn't everywhere?

I hope to someday make my way to the Bitterroot Valley.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Hello, and warm welcome to you. This is a great place to learn, meet great people, and find you you want things you never knew you wanted. (I never knew I wanted a desk pen set until I read the thread and saw the photos.)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
