Are you possibly using enough pressure on the vertical strokes that it is opening the tines slightly, and therefore letting more ink out?

If you use VERY light pressure, are the vertical strokes dryer?

I have a 51 that is like that. I may remove the nib and spread the tines slightly or i may leave it as is and consider it part this pens character.

Just give me the Parker 51s and nobody needs to get hurt.

Is the breather tube in place and clean? Is the breather hole on the feed lined up with the air channel on the underside of the collector?

You could also try opening the tines a bit, but, I would take a good look at the hood. If you can see lots of ink in the hood and collector but it is just not getting to the nib slit and onto the paper, then your nib may be too close or too far from the hood.

Parker 51’s are fantastic pens, but tuning them to write the way you like is tricky and can tax your patience... If all else fails, try a different ink. I just recently changed inks to Herbin Bleau des Profondears. it’s a very wet flowing deep blue that cleans up easily with just water. It’s changed the way my 51’s write. Hope this helps.

The nib probably needs good tuning. A slight misalignment of the tines may cause this problem. Also, as others have said, the hood and nib tips adjustment may be of help.

Where are you in Pakistan? If anywhere near the Capital - Islamabad - I may be able to tune the nib for you.

I think in the case of Mitto, anyone with half of the worlds known stocks of parker 51's would probably meet the minimum definition of "enthusiast". It would be hard to find someone more qualified to tweak you 51 than Mitto.

Mitto, you are a hero. And have been as long as I have looked through the Parker sub-forum.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
