Hello From Upstate Ny

I have recently gotten back into fountain pen ownership. It started innocently enough. I had circulation problems in my hands and decided to try my hand at cursive writing as a means of a home bred cure. It worked very well and I ended up buying a few Parkers which have always been one of my favorites. Now, these days there is a desert of information when it comes to fountain pens and it has been decades since I used one. So, coming across this site has been a blessing.

Thank you for verifying me. I can't wait to poke around and see what others have written here.

:) :) :cloud9:

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

I love my vintage Parkers (just picked up a Dove Gray 51 Vac a week ago at the Ohio Pen Show).

I generally suggest that new people click on the "View New Content" button when they log in (you can adjust how much/often stuff comes in in the sidebar on the main page). Don't do what I did when I started -- to read the Parker Forum. All of it. (In early 2012 there were 175 PAGES of threads -- it's bigger now....) Going through the New Content button means you'll get a good overview of a lot of different topics -- you might find information about brands you never heard of.

I also suggest that people check out the pinned Index to the Ink Reviews Forum (we live in the Golden Age of ink, with new companies starting up all the time, and every color imaginable).

But you should be warned that we are all shameless enablers here -- we will happily help you spend your discretionary funds on pens, inks, repair tools, paper, ephemera, sealing wax and seals, and pen shows.

Have fun, explore the site, and don't be afraid to ask questions (there are no stupid questions, even if someone has just asked the same question a month ago in another thread). I'm constantly astounded at the kindness, camaraderie, and willingness to share information amongst the members here (which is worldwide). Need a repair? Someone will have recommendations. Have a question about a vintage pen's imprint? Someone will point you to an answer. I had someone offer me first dibs on a PIF for a pen he was giving away, just because I had said in a thread that I liked that particularly model; and had another person send me a couple of Parker Penman Sapphire cartridges just so I could see what the fuss was about. Got a question about an eBay seller with a pen for sale? Someone will be able to give you the pros and cons about their experience.

So, what Parkers do you have? And what ink(s) are you currently using? And what other brands do you have or are considering?

Welcome! I'm in Upstate these days too! :)

Till the Devil whispered behind the leaves:
"It's pretty, but is it Art?"

Welcome, Spike, from a Chautauqua county native now in (almost) snow free Florida. You can find almost all things fountain pen here and thousands of friendly enablers to help pull you down the rabbit hole. Enjoy your time here. Exploring is almost as much fun as writing with a fountain pen.

Almost.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
