Hi to all members,

I am new to this forum and would like to say a thank you to all contributors who have answered my searches for information on pens whenever I used a search engine on the Internet and was directed to this site.

My name is Keith and I am a long term expatriate having lived in many parts of the world including UK, Dubai, Bermuda, Kenya, Kuwait, Thailand, Abu Dhabi and having travelled even more extensively in connection with my profession as an insurance loss adjuster. I am now retired and am currently staying in Jordan where I find the climate is beneficial to my health.

Over the years I have accumulated many different types and makes of pen from those scratchy cheap models used at school to models of a slightly improved quality as my career progressed and I was able to afford more famous brands. I have always appreciated being able to write with good quality instruments and as you can imagine in the early days before computers became common place a lot of information was hand written. The best fountain pen I have ever used was acquired in my teens. It was I think a Monta Rosa or Rose and it was wonderfully smooth to write with. It only cost a few pounds and was purchased from a specialist pen shop in my home city of Coventry. I recall it was a metal bodied gold coloured pen. Sadly it succumbed to overuse and was thrown away. In the intervening years I have searched for one as smooth and came close a few times with a Paper Mate Gold Flighter and a Waterman C/F Moire Barleycorn silver fountain pen presented to me by my wife. I was devastated when the Waterman was stolen during a move from Kuwait to UK. How fortunate then, after these many years to be able to find and purchase in an auction on a famous site the same model fountain pen a C/F Moire manufactured in France. I also acquired a second similar pen and ballpoint set but gold coloured which I intend to present as a gift to a good friend here in Jordan. The only drawback is to find an ink converter as the standard cartridges are not a good fit. Fortunately sites like this came to my aid and I found and purchased 2 Waterman C/F original (new) ink converters from a specialist pen seller in UK. They now await my next visit to UK to collect them.

I have commenced collecting vintage pens as a hobby and am an avid searcher for "bargains" on various Internet sites. If I need a review of a pen before purchase invariably an internet search throws up reviews posted on this site which I find most helpful when considering a purchase or bid in an auction.

I have purchased some vintage pens including such famous names as Montblanc, Parker and Pelikan and a few modern ones recently which were delivered to my relative's address in England and am looking forward to trying them all out when I next visit UK.

So thank you to all reviewers and please continue the good work. Your knowledge is invaluable to new and old collectors alike.

Kind regards.

Keith Pearson.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
