Watermina - A Dumb Question Perhaps

amk

Recommended Posts

I have managed to acquire a pen I've wanted for a while, the cute little Watermina 'night and day'.

However, I can't get the pen unscrewed to put in a converter. Soaking overnight: nope. Gentle warming with the hair dryer (which has just got 20 vintage pens un-shellacked and safely separated from their sections): nope.

Now before I do anything stupid and irrevocable, can I just check that the Watermina does indeed unscrew section from barrel just below the overlay, where you'd expect it to?

And any advice on what to try next would be very useful.

I know this sounds like a dumb question but I once spent an awfully long time once trying to unscrew the section of a Waterman glass cartridge pen (I can't remember the model name, if indeed it had one) only to find that it unscrewed about half way up the barrel!

Too many pens, too little time!

Yes I think I'm trying at the right place - but it's still not happening! So having applied WD40 by squirt, I'm going to soak the whole section and see if that helps.

Darn, this one is being such a beast! But I am going slowly as I really don't want to risk breaking it.

Both parts are plastic and I have never had an issue with any other Waterman model with parts of the same material.

These parts are never a precision (tight) fit so my gut feeling is that someone has applied something to the parts. Maybe to seal a leak or otherwise.

There has been documented/discussed issues with some Man 200 Rhapsody models where the plastic barrel shrank onto the brass section causing all sorts of problems for some.

And now, it writes nicely - fine line, quite crisp, a bit of feedback. The converter is working properly. I am rather pleased with the pen, though it's a teensy bit on the slim side for my tastes.

Thanks for the encouragement getting it unstuck.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
