Thank you for the very interesting post and helpful ink info. By the way, does anyone know a commercially available pen with this gorgeous "Hook'em" color? The closest I found and have is this Parker Duofold Centennial Orange (Big Red). Many thanks!

YOu might try Iroshizuku Yu Yake. Small sample below. I don't think the real life ink looks as bright as it does here on my monitor.

As far as pens, left to right are Parker Duofold Centennial, Pelikan 800 Burnt Orange, Nakaya in Araishu, and (less obvious) the Edison Pen Limited Edition for the San Francisco Pen Show (which to me looks more orange in real life due to the yellow highlights, especially in bright light).

Thank you for the comparison, whichwatch. On nibs.com it's explained that the Nakaya in Araishu is a color like Parker Duofold Big Red, and now I can see them side by side. It seems to me that Parker Orange is not earthy enough, and Pelikan Burnt Orange is not deep enough and seems a little pale compared to UT Orange. Out of the two, I'd still prefer the Parker Duofold Orange, only because it's an American brand for an American university, which seems more fitting. The San Fran pen show Edison is interesting and seems to have a kind of stardust effect.

I have the Diamine Blood Orange ink, which reminds me of the Longhorns Orange but is more reddish.

A couple of possibilities:

Monteverde Copper Noir or Fire Opal.

I would also have suggested KWZI Monarch (made for Fontoplumo) but I think it’s now sold out & unavailable.

I thought the same: the Dutch Orange is close! Here is the Diamine Blood Orange with the two Parker Duofold Orange, the Centennial and International version. Blood Orange also doesn't look too bad.

As far as the the color of the modern Parker Big Red goes, it's not the same color as the originals from the 1920s (as they appear now 90 years later). I have two original Big Red's from the late 1920s. They don't have exactly the same color - one is a tad more bright orange while the other is a tad darker and more dusty - but I figure exposure to light and oxygen through 90 years has caused some color change of the ebonite material. Whatever. my Pelikan Burnt orange comes very close to the color of the best kept of my two old (and likely faded) Big Red's.

Montblanc Le Petit Prince Red Fox ink can be a good option. When the pen is wet enough, it looks very close to the Longhorns Burnt Orange. This ink is a bit tricky in the sense that it can look just like dirty half dried blood, when the pen is not a wet writer. Perhaps the best match I can find in my very limited ink possessions.

As for pens, Conid Monarch seems extremely close. Has a bit of the earthier tones that the other suggestions seem to lack:

(the titanium even kinda hints at the dark grey Texas uses)

As for inks Colorverse Methuselah Tree may be close:

For a pen, also check out the Kaweco Sport Fox pen.

I had forgotten about that Conid Monarch. Yes seems very good but I had to quickly forget it upon seeing the price. I have a Conid Kingsize Demo and it was financially painful enough ;) The ink you mentioned is a nice match. I'll try it. Thank you!

The orange rumble is a great contender as it seems a bit more flat and I think that matches well with the brown hues. I also recently tried the Robert Oster Tangerine and it was also in the ballpark.

Another ink suggestion is Robert Oster Orange Rumble

The University of Texas lists Pantone 159 as the official Longhorn burnt orange. I know different screens will represent it slightly differently but thought I would include it for reference. Its surprisingly more brown than I think of when I think of the color from memory.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
