149 Platinum - Is It Scarce Or Just New?

So I was looking and saw there are very few 149 platinum versions on eBay? Hardly any used ones and not too many new ones for that matter. So I am wondering what others think, is the production more limited or is it just newer so many many thousands of these don't exist and are not changing hands. I guess the boutiques are selling these new. Is there any end date to this line or is it now a permanent pen, until they decide to yank it like the bordeux.

I think platinum and road gold joined the 149 list of offerings in 2015. The Platinum finish is priced at a premium (I think $30 to $50) so probably fewer are sold.

The platinum is here to stay but it will be many decades before it is as common as yellow gold in the secondhand market considering many secondhand 149s and 20-30 years old.

What everyone else has said, they are easily available new at authorized sellers. There are loads of Vi rage 149s on the market, but not nearly as many new models. The new 149 with a flex nib has my eye, wish I could find a well priced used one.

So - today is the first day I am using my new acquired 149 Platinum. For background, I have been using a 149 Gold for a very long time and quite often select if over my other pens in rotation, which are many of the early patron series and writer series and many of the 146 variations. It is a fantastic pen in size and shape and simplicity. I actually have 12 Gold 149s, from simply finding them locally over the years, but I regularly use one that had the serial number covered over by a paint pen (of course the seller didnt tell me that until i had drove 45 minutes to meet him, but I think I paid $100 or $125 for it - and then pen otherwise is excellent and writes excellent). Anyway - the silver color based on my first impression just doesn't have the same pop against the black resin. It doesnt stand out on my desk... looking around, my stapler is black and silver, so is my tape dispenser, and my phone headset, etc LOL... Just my 2 cents... and today I have a 2nd Platinum 149 coming to me in the mail, was $250, so I went for it...

Well, if you found a platinum 149 for $250 you can resell it for more so nothing to be sad about. It could make a pop in your wallet if not your desk! :D

I wish I would find such a deal.

I posted it for sale... Will probably sell the other one I have as well.

Decided today to use my Pelikan Gaudi, which is also Black and Silver.

I wonder if it's better to sell my Gold 149's on the classifieds here or on Ebay. I know here there is no/limited fees.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
