Carene - Yeah Baby

Recommended Posts

One good turn deserves another. I had just sorted out something for my neighbour...well 2 actually, I also replaced the battery in his Rotary watch.

Back home just about to start reassembling another watch and thought a quick check on ebay pens was in order.

And there it was, a Carene FP in Amethyst Bronze for sale in the UK. It was described as lightly used and it looked in fairly good con. I have been hunting one of these down for ni on 2 years or more. Seen a few in the States but way to far and expensive. So no time for rational decisions I just hit the £75 BIN. New sections are now £80+ so what the heck.

That is one beautiful pen! The price seems great too.

Excellent! Never seen that finish before, don't like gold but that looks like a good combination. Very good week for Carène hunters, with a little luck I'll get my second one in the next few days.

It's here (quickly) and with no dings/dents or scratches that I can see.

I had great difficulty extracting the period converter which once out showed why. It was holding on for dear life with a split mouth. So that's U/S.

Cap, barrel and section are currently in the ultrasonic cleaner set at 80c. Following this I have the section flushing system ready to put a gallon of warm soapy water through.

I decided to strip the cap clip down to polish under and get rid of any DNA.

The barrels bronze lacquer is really nice. The top coat is glass smooth and scratch free while the undecoat gives the impression of light abrading.

That's a very jazzy pen, in perfect condition. What beautiful finishes. The Carenes are pens worth the price.

Great that it found its way to you at last! Beautiful pen, hadn’t heard of that colour. The cap looks interesting too.

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

I got my black and gold essentials back on Friday from Parker Australia. It went in as a medium and came back as a stub. Very nice nib, smooth and wet as can be.

Carenes just seem to keep building up in my collection, I really don't know why.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
