Greetings From San Francisco

GOTO10

Recommended Posts

I've been lurking on the boards for some time now and figured I should poke my head up and say hello.

My quick history of fountain pens is growing up with a mix of Parker Vectors and one Lamy Safari from my Father. Pens dropped out of my life for some time in high school and then came back in once I started working. Initially with some lower end Waterman pens then a Carene. Sadly, the section had enough nib creep to make it aggravating to use so I set down pens for another few years. About a year and a half ago I fell back in to fountain pens and fell hard. I've probably spent more than I should on fountain pens since I got back into them and think I'll keep on making "good decisions" for the foreseeable future.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Sadly I don't think I'l be able to make Nov-2, too much going on that weekend. These other meeting of which you speak, when would they be?

Also, thanks all for the welcome.

Peter's Cafe happens almost every Sunday except when it doesn't and even then sometimes it happens though unannounced. It IS happening on the 3rd at 1ish PM. Peter's Cafe is in Millbrae by the train station.

I've shifted some stuff from Sunday to Saturday and will be giving this whole human interaction thing a shot.

Excellent news.

The whole interaction thing is overstated. This is Silicon Valley, most attendees look at their shoes...

See you there and bring pens and questions.

Welcome!

“Many boys will bring you flowers. But someday you'll meet a boy who will learn your favorite flower, your favorite song, your favorite sweet. And even if he is too poor to give you any of them, it won't matter because he will have taken the time to know you as no one else does. Only that boy earns your heart."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
