Few Months Old Toledo Stained Art Work

Recommended Posts

I bought a Toledo M900 few months ago, used it for a couple of days, cleaned it and put it in the pen case. Today, by chance, I took it out and immediately noticed stains on the beautiful art work. Initially I thought it was oxidation, but even if the main metal in Toledo is silver, everything is plated with gold. Oxidation or not I'm very unhappy with how this expensive Toledo looks after less than a year. I attached some pics, maybe you guys have seen this before. I will also contact Pelikan.

Gold, as in gold alloys (such as 14k or 18k gold) and plating (in this case vermeil) does tarnish, 24k gold doesn't. Jewelers or sunshine cloth (meant for gold) should be able to deal with that, really nothing out of the ordinary in that sense.

Thank you @Uncial, @mana and @farazqamar for the replies. I am more relaxed now that you're telling me this is something you've experienced before. The thing is I have a second Toledo M900, bought shortly after, as a gift for someone, and it looks pristine, in perfect condition. The tarnished one has been sitting in a Visconti pen case and the later in its original case. And none of my other pens have a single tarnish; granted I have been collecting fountain pens for ~2 years and some have seen paper more than others.

Some leather pen cases cause this type of tarnish on stored pens, because of the particular leather tanning process followed.

I freaked the first time I saw that "rainbow" coloured tarnish on a gold-plated pen clip, but thankfully it easily buffs off with a jewellers cloth.

The pen was sitting in a "Visconti Dreamtouch Leather 3 Pen Holder" with another Pelikan. I also have a "Visconti Dreamtouch Leather 12 Pen Holder" and no other pen was tarnished by the black felt material that's inside these cases.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
