Jacques Herbin Gris De Houle

I bought a new Pelikan Stresemann and wanted to find a grey ink to match the stripes. The few grey inks I have aren't really satisfying to me, so I blind bought this Gris de Houle (Swell Grey) from Jacques Herbin, a high-end offshoot of J. Herbin.

Gris de Houle has medium saturation. Such undersaturated inks aren't usually my favourites but I do enjoy from time to time some lesser saturated inks like Gris de Payne (Callifolio). Gris de Houle is quite a nice surprise. For a light ink like this I expected it to be dry and have little lubrication. Instead it's quite wet and smooth.

The colour itself is a grey grey that doesn't really lean to other colours. It writes down as slightly purple but dries greener. Depending on the wetness of the pen, there can be a huge difference in intensity, ranging from a light grey to a darker colour. It has a surprisingly good water resistance.

Comparison

(Diamine Earl Grey is a lot more purple. Callifolio Gris de Payne is very blue in comparison. Seitz Kreuznach is much more saturated and more purple.)

Miscellaneous

(Swabbing the ink on a full page with a folded pen, plus a little bit water. Sadly it's really difficult to capture it. The photo turns out paler and loses many details. There are different shades of purple and green and it is indeed reminiscent of ocean swells.)

Thanks for the very informative review. I really like this ink. I bought it months ago and like it every time I use it, because, as you say, it is "basically" a real grey without a lot of overtones or undertones. Still, its shift from a slight purple to green is fascinating, even although I see that to quite different degrees in different pens (duh).

I have the opposite taste: it always disappoints me when an ink shifts from purple to green. I wonder why some purple inks exhibit this behavior and others don't. As for variation from pen to pen, I am not sure the pen is as important a factor as the paper. For example, on many papers Robert Oster Purple Rock stays purple gray, but on holiday gift tags it comes out quite green.

Such a helpful review, and such nice artwork.

Thank you.

Thank you all!

Great review, thanks! I have a bottle of Gris de Houle in my ink drawer, that is now begging to be opened instead of waiting it’s turn.

I'm sure you'll like it. It's your kind of colour.

SO happy for you!

Enjoy the pen in good health. May you have many excellent years together.

Ink looks tasty too.

Thank you! It's now my favourite nib! So juicy, so bouncy, I don't think I can use another nib anymore!

Well in this case it doesn't really shift to green. It just turns less purple than at the beginning into a proper grey.

This one might tempt me, except for the fact that I JUST got a bottle of Diamine Earl Grey. Which I see you've included in the comparison swabs.

Thanks for the review, though -- I might keep this one in mind for pens that need less saturated inks.

If you want to look at an interesting gray (gray is one of my favorite colors) check out the color by karas kustoms, wolf gray. I love it.

I still don't like neutral and cold grays though. This is pretty neutral, slightly leaning towards cold. Warm grays like iroshizuky kiri-same are my favorite.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
