Bought New Mb 146 Ebay Fake?

I just recieved yesterday an unused Mb 146. Never been inked. Looks pretty legit overall but the piston opposed resistance on the first 2 twists I'd say. So just at the beginning of it's course. Has anyone encountered or heard of that?

If it hasn't been used for quite a while you would feel some resistance on the first turn, also I read somewhere on the forum that you'd kind of feel some click during the first twist when refilling the ink? (or was that the 149?), anyway don't force it. Try to give the nib a good soak for a few hours then also add a small/tiny amount of silicone grease on the inner turning knob to help with it. Also try to clean the inside of the fountain pens cap, if you get some ink even if the nib turned out to be spotless of any ink residue, you'd know that that pen was used (That's what I found out when I got my NOS 146 monotone BB). If you're not up to it, you could send it to a service centre and depending on the boutique you could get a (free of charge) servicing, That happened to mine when I wasn't quite happy that the turning knob was still a bit tight after all of the flushing with a pen flush. I only paid for the fountain pen to be shipped back to me interstate as there was no boutiques in my area & I was just visiting Sydney when I brought my pen in for inspection.

As AndyLogan says: don't force it.

But, if it's an unused pen, the piston may take a few slides up and down the barrel to get going smoothly. After a few journeys up and down, it should be sliding smoothly.

If not, it may require further investigation. I'd make sure it was all working properly, before inking it (even though ink can actually provide some 'lubrication') in case it has to be returned?

And congratulations. 146 is a great pen.

The Fake 146 pens have a regular converter inside. The blind cap completely unscrews from the fakes, and exposes the end of the converter. I am aware of no counterfeit 146 models which have an actual piston filler mechanism. A piston filler mechanism drives up the cost to produce.

For what it is worth, I just this morning pulled an older model 146 out of the pen box, one which hasn't been inked in months. The piston "started hard" but freed up and afforded good piston travel. Filled it with warm water and let it sit while we enjoyed a long breakfast. It now works like a champ again, no stickiness at the start. A little darkness in the water tells me I didn't do a very thorough job of flushing before I put it away last time. Oh well, fresh ink will right it all... now, where did I put that bottle of Omas Gray?

Thanks all for the great replies. But I'll say again, the pen had never been even inked (so the seller said..) Everything about the pen seems legit but there's a colour variation on the gold part of the nib that worries me.. Here are a few pics.

I love the interactions and the quality of the people hanging around here, really, but this complexity might keep me from interacting..

Pictures have uploaded fine. (Are you using the FPN upload tab?)

Pen looks good. Nice and clean ink window, as I'd expect from "uninked". I'd say legit.

A quick wipe with a jeweller's cloth will get the nib nice and shiny - although many of us like a bit of patina!

Let us know how the piston movement works out for you.

fullsizeoutput_751.jpeg And do you see the defect in the "U"? Not very clear on pic but there's a horizontal line missing..

The pen is fine and genuine. The line you ate nothing as missing is intentional. There is an umlaut over the u.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
