Pelikan Souverän M800 Brown-Black Fountain Pen

Hmmmm, more expensive than an M1000.

The price is out somewhere? Is it the case of MSRP being much more than people usually actually buy at? E.g. all the random sales and discounts on Pelikan pens.

M800 Brown-Black: U.S. MSRP $795. Retail $620.

E.U. MSRP 525 euro. Retail as low as 420 euro (incl VAT). US customers can pay ~$390 - $500 when VAT excluded depending on the vendor

M1000 Black: U.S. MSRP $1035. Retail $828

E.U. MSRP 615 euro. Retail as low as 492 euro (incl VAT). US customers can pay ~$457 - $600 when VAT excluded depending on the vendor

M1005 Stresemann: U.S. MSRP $925. Retail $740

E.U. MSRP 645 euro. Retail as low as 516 euro (incl VAT). US customers can pay ~$479 - $600 when VAT excluded depending on the vendor

That is provided my math is right with regards to subtracting the VAT and is dependent on the current exchange rate. These are the base retail numbers which are independent of additional discounts that might be found through various coupon codes and other special offers from vendors domestic and abroad. Also, the warranties on pens from EU sales to US customers are not honored by Chartpak historically so that should be factored into consideration.

The M1000 Black can be bought for 350Euros here. It makes the new M800 seem a bit steep. I'm presuming that the Burnt Orange and the Deep Sea Swirl (or whatever it was called on release) were both special releases. they both came in here at 350Euros when released. The cheapest I've seen the M800 Brown Stripe for is 510Euros. That's quite a jump which makes the Stresemann (that retails here for only 10Euro extra) seem like a bargain.

Im interested in one but will wait a few months to see how the pricing will work out via various sources.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have one pre-ordered with a BB nib. The nib will eventually get ground to a CI. Those BB nibs make great italics in the right hands (not mine!).

The M800 and M400 TS's were nice, but somehow didn't really float my boat. The vintage TS's look more natural to me. From the photos, the new Brown-Black stripe looks better. YMMV, of course.

David, I agree with you! I love the look of this one far more than the more modern Tortoise bindes. And, since I did not want to order a separate nib unit and could not find a seller with one coming with an IB nib option I went for a F nib. I have a BB CI I may switch out to this pen.

I'm with you on Pelikan IB nibs.

The Pelikan M400 Special Edition Brown Tortoise IB nib which Fritz Schimpf sent to me is a dazzling writer.

An IB Pelikan Souverän M800 Brown-Black would be quite a fountain pen on anyone's writing desk.

I hope that one will make its way to you!

Why don't you ask him if he can get you an IB nib? Maybe a sort of compromise can be reached.

I've had to cancel an order with Appelboom before and I recall getting the money back in less than a week. I used a credit card, in case that makes a difference.

I used paypal as my credit card issuer did not wish to authorize a purchase via the Appelboom service for credit cards. I have experienced 2-3 week waiting periods for paypal refunds to process, so I am weary of the idea of that. I did talk to Appelboom about getting an IB nib and they refused the idea of selling it with the pen except as a separate nib unit which would cost quite a bit more, and leave me with an additional nib still. I am not sure what I should do now. I don't really have a need for a spare M800 nib unit as I already have F, 2x M, B CI, and BB CI nibs. I placed the order with a fine nib, but again, I wanted to get an IB.

I have multiples on order with BB nibs from a different dealer. He said he will be charged extra from Pelikan for the BB or IB but will not pass that on to me since I am purchasing multiples. That may be why Appelboom did not want to substitute the nib for you.

I guess you have to decide if the nib is that important for you. An IB nib can always be bought later....or you could cancel your order and buy it from the vendor with the IB nib and float the difference until the refund comes in. That's what I would do. If you know your credit card's statement closing date, it should be easy to orchestrate the purchase with the refund so it will be seamless...money in, money out...then the right pen with the right nib would be on the way...first world problems, eh?

I don't really care for Renaissance Brown -- too busy for me. I LOVE Stone Garden however and own one. Blue Dunes didn't do anything for me either.

~ Intensity:

The M800 Stone Garden IB which arrived a few days ago is a splendid writer.

I now understand why you love yours.

The Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind on the IB nib has produced a crisp writer which is smooth and precise.

My friend Lam1 had expressed his appreciation for M800 Pelikans, but I'd felt reluctant to try one.

The experience of a few days with the M800 Stone Garden has expanded my limited perspective.

Therefore the Souverän M800 Brown-Black fountain pen has increased in interest for me.

Happy writing with your Stone Garden!

I LOVE this pen! I might not have gotten the IB nib after all but with them back in production I will fix that when the budget allows for it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
