Pen Shows Featuring Newer Pens

What are the pen shows that attract a high manufacturer and/or retailer presence with newer models of pens, as opposed to vintage? Washington and San Francisco certainly. What would you say are the others?

I haven't been to all that many different shows, and mostly on the east side of the US at that. I was at the Commonwealth Show yesterday, which is very small compared to some other ones I've been to. While most of the vendors were selling vintage, there were definitely a few selling new ones (Noodler's, Bob Slate, and Crazy Alan's Emporium come to immediate mind, plus some booth selling Aurora and the new Esterbrook pens). That's also the case for the Ohio Pen Show, although there will be more vendors with vintage stuff overall.

My best suggestion is to look at the listings for shows and see what vendors will be there. For instance, Anderson Pens sells mostly new pens at the shows they're at, and I think so does Vanness.

I haven't been to a lot of shows either. Aside from the San Francisco pen show, I've only been to LA and Atlanta. The LA Pen Show sort of changes as the weekend goes by. Thursday and Friday are vintage in majority. But on Saturday and Sunday, vendors change up and becomes a bit more into modern. For Atlanta, it does have a major vintage feel but I think it's 60% vintage and 40% modern.

From what I've seen on social media (Instagram & FaceBook) and personal reports, the Philly Pen Show, Baltimore, and Chicago has a large modern representation as well. Hope that helps!

Thanks,

Franz

The Ohio Pen Show is coming up pretty soon. While it has a reputation for its vintage emphasis, in recent years there has been a great increase in the presence of newer pens.

My table will be full of newer pens, including more than 35 Nakayas, as well as Pelikans, Montblancs, Viscontis, Deltas, Sailors, and more. I hope you'll stop by. There will be plenty of other tables with newer pens, too.

Also, the Central Ohio Pen Club will be selling two Limited Edition inks available only at the show.

A full vendor list and details can be found on the show's web site:

Pen Show Poland in Katowice skews towards modern. Mike Selway brings vintage, and Sarj, well, he's the One-Man Pen Show, so he brings a mix, but mostly modern. The Polish vendors tend towards the modern.

I don't know of any show that is strictly vintage. To have a successful show today you need to have a mix and if you are a large show you have a large selection of both. The Chicago Show, first weekend of May, has 165+ tables and we have a large selection of both vintage and modern.

Agree with Roger's comment above.

Dallas Pen Show is next week. We'll have 132 tables (because of space limitation, not because of the number of vendors who would like to come) of a good mix between custom/vintage/modern pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
