Which Is The Least Feathering Ink?

Which is the least feathering ink, do you think?

I go to Sailor Sei-boku when I know I will write on crappy paper. Quite a few of the standard Sailor inks are also quite acceptable. KWZ's IG inks feather much more than you would expect from IG inks. I haven't tried any other IG inks to compare with though.

How is Noodler's X-feather? Any other inks you have found preform well on low quality paper?

I know KWZ is working on one ink specifically for really rubbish paper, but it's still in R&D.

Noodler's X-feather doesn't feather on most papers but it may bleed through.

The standard blue, black and blue-black ink from Pelikan (Pelikan 4001) works quite well on most papers.

Noodler's Black

Diamine Registrar's Ink (even better than Noodler's Black)

Noodler's V-Mail North African Violet.

Platinum Blue-Black.

Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black.

Sailor kiwa guro outperforms any other ink and I include noodlers black and x- feather. X-feather comes very close but it does bleed through which kiwa guro doesn't.

I must try the legendary Kiwa-Guro

Hands down Kiwa-Guro.

  • Best behaved on cheap paper,
  • has a lubrication that is just right: Smooth on any paper without feeling like it runs away from you.
  • One of the easiest water resistant/permanent inks to clean out of a pen.

Some other considerations (others I use on cheaper paper):

  • Pilot Blue Black
  • Noodler's black

R&K Scabiosa and Salix, both IG. Very little bleedthrough as well

R&K pigment inks (they call them SketchINK), a little more bleedthroug than the IGs

Noodler's X-feather, LONG dry time.

Diamine Registrar's Ink, another IG behaving flawlessly.

Diamine Quartz Black, China Blue. These two surprised me on cheap 80gsm copy paper.

The praise for Kiwa-guro makes my experiences of Sei-boku seem fairly accurate.

Kiwa guro performs a lot better than sailor sei boku in my opinion. Although sei boku is a bit more water resistant

I agree.

Noodler's Black. It's one of the main reasons I use it the most.

Noodler's Black ended up impressing me as well.

At first I didn't like that it wasn't one of those Jetblack Black's (Kiwa-Guro, HOD, Platinum Carbon Black), especially in my drier pens,

but I actually grew to like it, especially one day when the hue clicked with me as having a somewhat vintage tint to it, which I spontaneously became receptive of and welcoming towards,

Plus I find it's one of the easier to clean permanent inks.

It's one of my preferred inks despite the price which is a large bonus.

Aha! Good to know. However, I'm no big black user...

Lamy blue, black and blue-black,(the old iron-gallon as well as the new one). A bit dry and writing very well and straight on all kinds of paper.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
