I used disposable fountain pens for the last 10 years or so. Within the last year I graduated to much more pricey and fun pens. Also lurking here and reddit corresponds with timing of me gradually buying pricier pens - go figure.

  • 2 weeks later...

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

I will be polite and NOT ask "What exit?" (I had friends from NJ in college, and both of them swore up down and sideways that the reason they drove the way they did was because they were used to NJ highways; OTOH, CT and MA drivers scared the bejeezus out of both of them...). And when my dad retired, my parents literally moved to "just a half a mile off of Rt. 88" in Bricktown....

I generally suggest that new people click on the "View New Content" button at the top of the page, to get a good overview of a range of topics (you can adjust how much/often that gets updated in the sidebar on the main page). And to have a look at the pinned Index to the Ink Reviews Forum (we truly live in the Golden Age of inks, and there are some amazing colors).

But I also warn people that we are all shameless enablers here, and will happily help you spend your discretionary budget on pens, ink, paper, repair tools, books, pen shows, ephemera, sealing wax and seals.... (I fell down the vintage pen rabbit hole.... When I started I had never heard of Parker 51s; now I have TEN of them (7 Aerometrics and 3 51Vacs). Then I said "Oh, no, I don't like the Art Deco looks of Vacumatics (I now have about 10 of THEM as well). Too easy to go "OOOH... SHINY!" (And that can be as simple as "Hey, that's a really neat fill system...."

Of course my husband tells people "Oh, she used to collect pens -- now she collects ink...."

So what pens did you graduate to after the disposables?

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
