Alternative To Diamine Registrar's

WhiteStarPens

Recommended Posts

I have both Akkerman #10 and Diamine Registrar's and they look absolutely the same, fresh on the paper as well as months later. I got them last year directly from Akkerman and Diamine.

After some testing with Registrars and Akkerman #10, I am convinced that they are exactly the same formulation. Which is great because a 100ml bottle of Registrars is much more value than 60ml of Akkerman. Although the Akkerman bottle is pretty great!

Platinum blue black in bottles is another alternative with mild ferrogallic content. I found it v well behaved with zero tendency to drop sediments. Similar was the Montblanc blue black but it has been discontinued. DRI I was a great fan of, used up their large 100ml plastic bottles regularly back in the day but the ink used to drop a v large amount of sediment. It was such a problem that I could later on use the ink only in my eye droppers which could be taken apart fully with no harm. Finally I stopped using this ink.

...Strong IG inks like Akkerman #10, DRI and ESSRI require some more care as they have a tendency to develope a sediment when in contact with oxygen....

This is true in the bottle, not just in the pens. The image below was a sheet I created two months ago to make a choice from my three IG inks. It shows what Diamine Registrars looks like once it precipitates out in the bottle. The other bottles haven't displayed the same tendency over many years. Knock on wood.

If you really want to save dough, get into a 60-ml bottle of Hero's No. 232.

I would be interested in picking one up, but I haven't seen it in stock anywhere.

I got my last bottle from Aliexpress. Hero 232 is one of my favorite inks and very well behaved.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
