Hello there. I'm not totally new (still inexperienced) to the fountain pen world as I have some Lamys, mostly Safaris, and a CP1, Logo. I use fountain pens since I was a kid, and I started with a Lamy.

So, I decided to make my own fountain pens, this is my first try with a 3d printer: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3812007

I'm here because I need info, especially suggestions about books to read (PDF, ebooks...). I need to know how a fountain pen is made, how the feed works, so that I can attempt to replicate one.

Currently I'm following this blog: https://fountainpendesign.wordpress.com/ I found a lot of useful stuff in there.

Sorry, that is Pen_Ingeneer, not peningeneer. Someday I have to read through his full blog.

Yes, read his blog. It totally worth the read. At least for me, as I am not an experienced enthusiast.

Thank you for the report.

I received a 3D printed FP from a Kickstarter campaign today. It's definitely a unique piece and writes well so far.

I'm not going to sell anything, just sharing 3D customizable pens. But can you please tell me what pen you bought? I'm just curious to see it. If some rule don't allow you to post here the pen you bought, can you send me a private message? Thank you.

had a while ago a mental exploration on producing an FP on a 3D printer and had a longish discussion with some guys on reddit. As a play and just copying ordinary FPs it works. I wanted to use the peculiarities of 3D printing to get rid of a feed... and make the whole pen out of one piece (excluding the cap, of course). If you are interested, I'll have a look if I can find it again.

with kindness...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
