Sounds like a good test drive for the 823 : )

I know I may be a minority, but I personally found the 823 to be too heavy for my hand. I was fatigued in a matter of sentences.

In particular, I found the weight distribution of the 823 unfavorable. I've used heavier pens with much less trouble, but those were more back weighted to the web of my hand while I found the weight of the 823 was distributed relatively more towards the front challenging my fingers to the point of fatigue.

I wish they made an 823 with a piston filler. I don't for the life of me understand why Pilot limits their piston filler to the CH 92 : (

I, too, am besotten with the Wing Sung 699. I have and love the Pilot 823-- for me it's a pen that immediately *felt* just right in my hand and wrote beautifully. The WS699 has very good build quality and is also a treat to write with. It's fast become one of my favorite pens and is a great bargain at less than $19 on eBay.

Ooh, I didn’t even know that Pen Ramblings are a thing! This looks really good - thanks for the write-up :)

I hope to try out a Pilot 823 at a pen meet in September, so I will try to Stay Strong at least until then.

I’m happy to see that your Teeling Mix is still behaving itself

Like my ink ramblings, I feel I lack the discipline, structure & to include enough non subjective relevant content to call anything I post a "review"

Stay strong. Save up. I'm sure you'll love the 823.

(Teeling Mix going strong, bless it)

Thanks for the review. Mine arrived this morning (about half an hour ago). Exactly the same pen. Aside from having to put up with a fiddly little fine nib (I hate fine nibs!) the pen is impressive and it fills so simply and holds an ocean of ink. Despite being to thin-nibbed for my liking, the pen writes really well. I don't find it heavy at all, but then I'm used to using large pens with plenty of heft.

A jinhao medium fits it, and only costs about $1.25

Well it is on my "probable buy" list for next month (September). Just spoke with a knowledgeable friend who bought one with the solid section who liked it enough to order another with the transparent section.

Also, I will be attending the local, Commonwealth Pen Show "in Boston" on the 15th of September and expect to use most, if not all of my monthly pen budget there.

I had an "823" with a medium nib which was okay except that I much prefer a fine or extra fine nib. I sold it to a friend, who, for at least a short time, decided that it would be his only regular EDC pen. I expect to see him at the show and watch his buying activity there.

Thank you for the review.

Interesting to hear that a few people are buying a 699 even though they own/owned an 823.

Have fun at the show.

I'm tempted by this Wing Sung and have to remind myself that I _have_ an 823 (PO). So...no, stop looking at this pen!

But man...I'm so tempted!

This pen intrigues me. I usually don't like pens with terrifically large ink capacities (as I enjoy swapping inks on a regular basis!), but this one seems really neat. Same with the 823, but far less costly- an important factor for me right now!

So tempting! But I have spent my pen allowance for now.

Is there a specific model of Jinhao nib that fits?

  • 5 weeks later...

Is there any evidence of rust on these pens metal parts such as the rod?

None apparent for me. Still very, very happy.

(I'd noticed someone has swapped out a Platinum Music nib into the 699 - Ooo :yikes: )

* UPDATE My 3776 nib does not, repeat, does not fit my 699

well my 699 arrived a couple of days ago, still getting to know it but so far so good, the nib indeed look better in real metal. Won't judge on the writing part until I get at least at least a full fill of writing off it , but I do consider to get now the Smoke and the Clear version ; BTW want to ask if you guys 699 come with a black or is it brown finales ( vacuum pull button ) / section ... It seems both are there

I was looking a my 823 and thinking ... hmm this nib do not look like it will fit there ... now ....

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
