than the blue or red stripe, all fine nibs? The barrel color could not cost that much more to produce.

Just curious.

Depends on the seller. Doubt it is supply and demand...the green ones are among the most iconic of colors for Pelikan and are in continuous production unless I'm mistaken. There shouldn't be any shortage of them.

If it's Amazon, you might be able to blame the algorithms -- the more a product is viewed or searched for, the more the price goes up I think.

You're looking at the wrong website. Look elsewhere and you will find it's the same price. I would even guess that the green version is the most common one and so, by all rights should be cheaper.

Using right now:

Jinhao 9019 "EF" nib running Birmingham Railroad Spike

I actually searched M600s and M800s on Amazon and eBay and found a myriad of prices all over the map for multiple colors. Just pick the cheapest price from a seller you trust...

Amazon and ebay.

But how many online shops that specialise in selling fountain pens and paraphernalia and are recognised official Pelikan stockists have you checked, to confirm that the MSRP and/or market prices for the blue-striped and red-striped ones are less than that of the green-striped M600? Amazon's prices change all the time, even when an item is sold by Amazon itself, and of course third-party sellers in the Amazon Marketplace can set their prices willy-nilly, without regard to the cost of manufacture or anything like that.

I just had a look:

  • La Couronne du Comte, in the Netherlands, sells all three models for the same price.
  • Cult Pens, in the UK, sells all three models for the same price.
  • Pen Chalet, in the US, sells all three models for the same price.
  • Peter's of Kensington (which is not a specialist pen/stationery store), in Australia, sells the green-striped and red-striped M600 models for the same price, but does not appear to stock the blue-striped one.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
