Suggestions To Restore Vintage Mb Star

1. It seems that a piece of the black hard rubber has chipped off on this cap top. Any suggestions for how to repair it. I was thinking some PMNBR 9 - I put a blob there and let it dry and then sand it, then I could apply a coat on the entire cap top to help even it out?

2. The cracks on the cap top. I could leave it, but Im worried it going to get worse. If I were to address it, what would you suggest. Would a white super glue like this be the answer? https://www.amazon.com/StewMac-Tinted-Super-Glue-White/dp/B01HYJR1T2/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=white+super+glue&qid=1566142271&s=gateway&sr=8-3

I would suggest to clean and degrease the cavity and fill it up with a few layers of

liquid black celluloid.

The celluloid sticks remarkably well on a rough and clean HR cavity in my experience

Apply thin celluloid layers with an intermediate drying time of at least 12 hours, better 24

hours Then sand and polish.

I'm assuming we're looking at a chip that has been filled with black cobler's wax.

If that was my MB (I have a similar safety) I'd use some Loctite 480 (a black rubberised cement) - I use this for filling in teeth marks in barrel ends and tool marks in section ends (though these can sometimes pop back with some gentle heat) and have had some success with small cap lip chips. It seems to stick reasonably well to BHR and works better with a variety of plastics.

You'll want to be super careful with the masking and sanding. I's suggest masking the star off with tape and using a nail buffer to smooth and polish. The Loctite will want to be laid down in layers with lots of patience between applications.

I was considering Loctite, I have tried it earlier and it has potential. Ill keep you posted. Thanks

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
