Places To Visit? South Korea

MikeGB

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Heading to Japan and Korea next October for a month and I am looking to acquire a pen or two.

To purchase something or not, any recommendations on shops or places to visit fountain pen related?

Thanks!

A lot of suggestions about Japan in the Japan forum.

Korea is not a country for fountain pens. Very few shops selling overpriced Japanese pens and very few pens made in Korea.

I visit both countries for business every year since 25 years.

I think it's too late to reply to this post, but I'll leave it behind because someone might see it later. I'm Korean, and fountain pen heavy user.  There are no companies in Korea that produce Korean brand fountain pens. (I know only one brand, but... The quality of that pen is the worst.) Instead, We  have domestic ink brands (colorverse, egoistar, ect), and also have Korean offline penshops that sell lots of inks or foreign brand's fountain pen. If you want to see it, search 'Blue Black', 'Boheme', 'Best Pen'. Those are the names of pen shops with offline stores. If you go to a large stationery store in Korea, you will be able to see fountain pens, but you will probably only see brands like Lamy, Parker.

if you go to a Japanese fountain pen store, you'll find fountain pens and ink from Japanese brands like Sailor and Pilot. The country prefers their own fountain pens to European fountain pens. You can also see Japanese fountain pens in Korean pen shops, but I don't recommend buy it in Korea because Japan will be much cheaper. But if you want to buy other asian fountain pen like Taiwan(Have you ever heard about Twsbe? I really love it), or China, I recommend buy it in Korea.

Thanks for sharing this! I actually found this, too, but I was hoping for more current information considering the changes since the pandemic. I did find Besen with a help of a Korean friend though and will try to visit Blueblack next :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
