Hi,
I'm newly addicted to these wonderful things.
Their aesthetic beauty and craftsmanship are the motivation I needed to begin my journey to improve my penmanship from "prescription worthy" to legible and maybe beyond. No tool can perform miracles, it's up to the user to become proficient with it and learn its' characteristics, limitations, etc. Improving my handwriting could easily be practiced by using a disposable ballpoint pen and foolscap paper, but the inspiration wouldn't be there, at least not for me... it would seem more like drills from my childhood school years. Just after last Christmas, I found the 40+ year-old Scheaffer fountain pen with a spare cartridge. A cheapy that at the time sold for under $3. When I tried it way back then, I just couldn't get the hang of it and remember how watery the ink was, compared to my familiar ballpoints. It was messy and didn't write well. I also wasn't aware of the great significance of paper qualities. Fast-forward to late December and my experiences with other media and arts have broadened my awareness and skills so that when I tried it for the first time in decades, it was a decent pen. But it didn't seem all that special, like my scribbling, and I began my search for something better, but still affordable.
My handwriting has improved since that time as I've not only practised but applied lessons from watching videos of cursive writing and calligraphy techniques.
I now have some "Modern Classic" pens from Dryden Designs (1 M, 1 F), some Jinhao X-450's (one is now a Frankenpen), a Jinhao Chinese Dragon and a Noodler's Konrad. All of these pens write better than anything that I've previously used, including gel pens, and with papers to match them and now my quest for "just the right inks". I guess I'm now addicted.
I finally heard about this community and am trying to navigate the various haystacks of information, questions and answers.
Thanks for letting me be a part of this.
Mike

Hi Mike, Welcome in, and at the risk of sounding like a broken record, do you know about Scriptus, the Toronto pen show? You'll find new and vintage writing equipment there, also if you search for ''Pen Stores in Toronto", several places pop up. Best of luck and enjoy yourself.

I haven't heard of Scriptus until now. Thanks for risking that sound. :) I found the Wonder Pens Studio Shop not too far from me and have had great customer service experiences there.

I'm glad you found Wonder Pens, it is a great store, you'll see them at Scriptus too, as well as me, my sweetie, who custom fits-out boxes for pen storage and a huge space full of other pen people. It's a blast.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
