Dry Conklin

Recommended Posts

I have a Conklin duragraph which consistently starts very poorly. I think the resin work on the duragraphs are a great value but the nibs on the other hand, are not. I often I have to "refill it" to get it to start writing properly. I know they are know for this but does anyone have a good solution for the hard starts?

Ive considered modifying the feed myself but thought I'd see if anyone has a better solution?

Is this a vintage Duragraph, or is it one of the "recreation" pens made by the more recent iterations of the Conklin Pen Company?

If this is a pen made within the last 10 years or so, then your experience is not at all uncommon. I have many "recent" Conklin pens, as I like their resins and designs. I do not like their feeds and nibs.

Most of the time, I can get them to work well with just a different "generic" #6 nib and some adjustment of the tines to optimize ink flow. My usual nib brands, easily found on the web, are the Knox nibs from Birmingham Pen Company, JoWo nibs from various sellers, and the Bock nibs, also from various sellers.

I have not tried the "Store Brand" nibs (like Anderson, Goulet, etc.) or Nemosine nibs. I just use whatever I have in the parts box. . .

I too enjoy the look and feel of the Duragraph and All American, and share your frustration trying to get the pens to write well. Stop wasting your time with the Conklin nib. It’s a lousy design and the metal is of poor quality that resists adjustment. I have sprung a nib or two trying to get these to write well. Replace it with another. I use Jowo #6 in all my Duragraphs. They have even sat, nib up in my pen cup literally for months yet start right up every time and write great.

The Conklin feeds are fine. Pull the nib and feed out of the section and change the nib. Once you put a decent nib in there you will see a big difference. You’ll have a pen that you love to write with.

Good luck...

Thanks, I have thought about changing the nib but was hoping there may be something I can do with the stock nib. I have changed a few nibs out so it should not be a problem but also didn't want to throw more money on a pretty inexpensive pen without knowing that it would actually help the writing experience with them. I will have to try this out. Thanks!

You can shoehorn an Edison nib and feed into the Duragraph which helps a bit. At least as much as swapping out a miserable nib for a questionable one helps! Agree the resin work is impressive on the new pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
