Snorkel On A Plane?

I was wondering if a full Sheaffer snorkel pen of any kind ( I have a pfm) is safe to carry on an aeroplane.

I have carried a snorkel on planes. Nib up during ascent, used to write while at altitude, no problems. As with any pen, pay attention when removing the cap just in case.

Same experience here - tips up! I have also taken a Skyboy to write on a plane on purpose on a few occasions, and whatever the truth about them not being much if any different from regular non-Skyboys, it certainly performed beautifully!

After years of trying, here's my personal lesson: one should not snorkel on a plane. One should sleep on a plane and snorkel in the sea.

I have so far carried a waterman 515, early sheaffer with a nib 5-30 , sheaffer snorkel admiral, and a parker duofold button filler from 30s without too much trouble. As long as they are kept without shaking too much. Although i haven't had them filled to the very top they have been filled up fairly. Worst that has happend is a drop or two in the nib and in the case of the parker a little ink coming out of the cap via the vents. i would suggest putting them in a zip lock bag and preferably not carry on your pocket. in the case of the old parker i didn't exactly had it up right and may not have had it fully capped either :(. thats just me being careless :( .

 

I have had worse leaks when carrying them on a bus. I don't think pressure changes are causing too much trouble these days with modern airliners. Although i'm supposed to carry the nib upright i usually don't really check. waterman 515 and the sheaffers so far haven't given me trouble. i just keep them in my hand luggage with my laptop etc. for just in case, i suggest you keep them in a zip lock bag and keep a sheet of blotting paper with you. If it happens to leak then you have what you need and the zip lock bag should keep it contained everything else safe. basically its not going to empty the pen.

 

as always be careful when opening the cap just in case. If you have to write while flying then be doubly careful :P

I've found mine pretty reliable on planes. Or anywhere really.

 

I was going to make an annoying snorkel joke but I see I was beaten to it by KaB. Darn.

Modern airplanes are definitely lot better at cabin pressurization. If you've been on old propeller aircrafts, you really come to thank the inventor of jet engines. To make matters worse, smoking in airplanes was allowed until 1988(!) and the smoke would gum up the pressure vents, requiring much time and money to clean them.
