Hello From Buffalo, Ny

I have made a handful of posts on FPN, however I didn't notice the "introductions" category until now.

I grew up in Rochester, NY, and moved to Buffalo once I started working here as an RN. At 28 years of age, I am currently entering my second year of medical school (Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences), and my study methods revolve around using the fountain pen. My first experience with a fountain pen was 10 years ago, with a Sheaffer Viewpoint Calligraphy pen. I have been seriously using fountain pens for three years, beginning with a Lamy Al-Star (Charged Green, EF), a Pilot Metropolitan (black, F), and a Pilot Varsity (M).

As of this moment, my favorite pens include:

1. Lamy 2000 (F)

2. Pilot Falcon (resin, F)

3. Sheaffer TD with Triumph nib (F)

4. Parker "Big Red" (M)

5. Noodler's Ahab "frankenpen" modified to use a Zebra/Nikko G nib

I derive a lot of enjoyment out of restoring vintage pens, especially if it's something very old, or with a great design. Some of my favorite projects: 1903 Conklin Crescent, any Sheaffer Snorkel, and a couple of Parker 51's.

These interests have led me to calligraphy, and I currently practice Copperplate, Chancery Cursive, and Spencerian.

I have found these skills to be incredibly useful in writing letters (networking, thank-you notes following interviews, letters of interest, etc.).

I doubt any of this is useful to you as you read this, but maybe it will be interesting regardless. Thanks, it's great to be here.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Thanks for the responses, it's amazing to see members from all over the world. It's been many years since I have joined a forum, maybe I will stick around ;)

Welcome to FPN from a former western New Yorker who now hunts the elusive wild pen in Florida. Enjoy your time here. International (and very friendly) membership, many dedicated enablers, and a living encyclopedia of most things fountain pen make this forum special.

Hello there from just over the border, I'm writing from the Toronto area, welcome to FPN. And while you're here, do you know about Scriptus, the Toronto Pen Show? Last Sunday in October, Toronto Reference Library. Come on up! Your dollar will go further too.

We are neighbors! I have heard of Scriptus, I hope to go.

Hey! Fellow Buffalonian here (albeit an expat. I grew up in Riverside before all the retail on Tonawanda Street disappeared). Can't wait to get back and see the now completed Darwin Martin House and how Canalside is developing.

The pen show in Toronto is tempting!

Oh Guys, you should come to Scriptus. It's one day, but so much to see. Plus, as I said, with the exchange rate the way it is, your dollars will go much further up on this side of the border. I'm not sure how many vendors are set up to to take US currency or credit cards, so if you do come, better have Canadian dollars though. I have a table (there's a surprise), hope to see you.

Might just need to get my passport renewed :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
