Hi - Ive been collecting pens for about 20 years, and finally decided to catalog my collection (and perhaps sell some). I have been out to this site numerous times over those 20 years.

I have a pen Im trying to identify - which forum do I go to post my question?

Thank you!

Hello. I'm thinking you have 3 options as to where to post a question that has to do with identifying a pen:

1. Under the "Writing Instruments" section, there's the "Fountain and Dip Pens - First Stop" forum, basically a catch-all discussion group.

2. If you at least know the brand of the pen, there're forums dedicated to different brands under "Brand Focus."

3. And/or if you know where the pen was manufactured, there're forums broken down by geography under "Regional Focus."

Good luck!

Welcome!

There is a North Shore (Chicago) branch of the Chicago Pen club which meets, I believe, once a month in Evanston.

I have a pen friend who has been very active in that group. If memory serves, some of the others in that Club recently have done some cataloging for a big estate.

If you are interested, PM me, and I'll do my best to facilitate an introduction. I hope to be seeing him in DC at their Pen Show in a couple of weeks

Hello and welcome to FPN! I also live in the Chicago area.

If asking on FPN doesn't work out, you can visit the North Shore Pen Club as Seney724 said. They usually meet the second Sunday of every month in Winnetka.

If you can make it to downtown, go to Atlas Stationers with the pen. Their staff is very knowledgeable and may be able to identify it.

Currently inked:

- Pilot Custom 743 <M> with Pilot Black

- Pelikan M120 Iconic Blue <B> with Pilot Blue

- Lamy Studio All Black <M> with Pilot Blue-Black

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Thank you! Atlas Stationers is a very dangerous store for me to go to!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
