A Kind Of Royal Blue

Has anyone of you the Otto Hutt or the Waldmann blue ink?

They are more on the dry side, slightly purple - a very nice everyday ink, much nicer than Pelikan RB.

IMO, these inks look similar to identical.

Both companies do certainly not make their own ink. So the question is, who makes them?

Otto Hutt Blue looks like

It is possible that Pacific Blue of Seitz-Kreuznach is also of similar color, at least their cartridges look like.

I found several reviews - one of them shows a purplish blue, the other a blue-blue. Judging from the cartridge, there must be purple in it.

And "Made in Austria" on their package points to that mysterious maker of ink, Sellner.

I bought a 30-ml bottle of Waldmann blue in May 2012 for 17.00 Euros. The label doesn't say "Royal Blue", or any other blue or even just "Blue". The label says only

Waldman

-GERMANY-

A 30-ml bottle of Pelikan 4001 Königsblau/Royal Blue -- in exactly the same shape -- at that time came in at about 4.25 Euros.

The bottle of Waldmann didn't come in a box, and the bottom of the bottle doesn't indicate anything, whereas the bottom of the 4001 bottle says in raised lettering on the glass

78 04

GERMANY

30 ml 1 fl.oz.

Instead of the usual black plastic cap with a pelikan on it (for the 4001 bottle), the Waldmann cap consists of a heavy, polished stainless steel or chromed metal version.

The following is an old shot of a chromatography of the 4001 Royal Blue (to the left), the Cross Blue and, to the right the Waldmann blue.

In that chromatogram, it's hard to tell if they are all identical but the following sketch seems to indicate that the 4001 and the Waldmann blue are in fact "the same".

In this scan, the saturation seems to vary here and there, but to me, the degree of purpleness looks the same. In any case, on paper they have the same amount of wetness, drying time, feathering, bleeding and shading.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
