Classic Fell Apart

I was cleaning up an arranging some pens and pulled out my Twsbi classic. When I took the cap off , the nib was loose and the cylinder section that fits over and between the nib and barrel came off also. I got it all cleaned up and although everything fits, i do not think it will stay together by just pressing back together, the parts simply do not fit tight enough. Is there some kind of adhesive that would hold and seal the parts together or should I just toss it.

Regards

You should maybe check for any cracks in the section, where the nib and cylinder press in.

Do you remove the nib whenever you clean the pen? Or have you noticed it fitting less snugly before this?

Is it loose where the nib housing (2) screws into the pen body (8) (red arrow)? Or where the metal nib pushes into the black plastic nib housing (green arrow)?

It seems as though part 4 which is metal is permanate with with part 2, plastic nib housing. I don't know how they are attached, but they are together very tightly. The problem is the nib housing, let's call the #4 collar and #2 piece is held by the #6, section i guess and it is a loose slip fit, no threads and then that is again a loose fit to the #8 body. Everything is a slip or press fit but is too loose to hold. I have not used this pen in over a year and don't remember any problems the last time i had it out until now.

I had never removed the nib, and do not know if it is a screw in or slip fit.

No suggestions from anyone who might know more about this than I so I decided to take the bull by the horns. I roughed up the ends of the barrel and the nib that slip into te section, then the inside surface of the section. I applied a very thin layer of a high grade epoxy, being careful not to get any into the inner feed vent hole. As soon as i slipped anything together i filled with water to make sure the feed was open, or at least hope so. I will know the outcome in a couple hours when the epoxy sets.

I understand the nib was supposed to be friction fit, but this was so sloppy that ink flowed out through the section and would literally fall out of the pen. If this epoxy works i may have a useable pen, although i will never be able to disassemble as it as intended. It looks to me like Twsbi needs to get their quality control tolerances better. This is one in the sapphire blue, really a striking pen with the faceted barrel and cap. I suspect though that it will be headed for the trash in a day or so.

I had a similar problem with my Classic, though it got to the point where the entire unit broke internally. Now I returned this item as it was new and I still had some consumer protection (Australia is pretty good with this I've heard by international standards) so I sent the unit back to the retailer for replacement.

While in my case it was a defective product, I would recommend just looking for a replacement from your distributor/ retailer or contacting twsbi directly if that fails. Its easier than jury rigging a fix.

edit: spelling and late reply, sorry

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
