I recently discovered the world of fountain pens. I have 12 pens both vintage and modern in my small collection. I particularly like the copper Esterbrook SJ double jeweled that I recently found on eBay.

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN: What part of the Mountain State are you from (my mother's mother's family were from the Buckhannon area).

I generally suggest that new people click on the "View New Content" button at the top of the page to get a good overview of a range of topics (you can adjust the frequency how much/often you get them in the sidebar on the main page). And to check out the pinned Index to the Ink Review Forum. But I also warn people that we are all shameless enablers, who will happily help you spend your discretionary funds on pens, inks, paper, repair tools, sealing wax, ephemera, pen shows, etc. And in your case I will ALSO warn you that vintage Esties are like potato chips -- you will quickly find you can't have just one (ask me how I know...). And I wasn't kidding about pen shows -- depending on where you live, the closest one might be the Ohio Pen Show, the first weekend in November, just north of Columbus in Dublin.

So, besides the SJ, what other pens do you have? And what inks are you currently using? Oh, by, the way, one of the reasons vintage Esterbrooks are SOOO addictive is that they're well made, still relatively inexpensive for vintage, and have a huge range of nib widths and grades (although the really exotic nibs get super pricy :o).

Im from the Point Pleasant area over on the Ohio River. I used to drive truck and know Buckhannon fairly well. Im planning on going to the Ohio pen show if my work schedule doesnt interfere. I drive a school bus and coach archery.

I have a Persian Waterman, Wahl Eversharp Doric, Wearever Flat top, Epenco (all payment for pc work), Cross Calais, Cross Radiance, Lamy Al-Star, Waterman CF, 2 soon to be 3 Esties, and a Montgrappa Lunar Landing Open Edition ( won in the Goulet drawing). For ink, I use Noodlers Heart of Darkness, American Aristocracy, Monteverde Forest Green, Lamy Bronze, or the old bottles of Shaeffer Skrip blue and red.

The Doric and the flat top need some work but since they guy gave them to me I wont complain.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
