Waterman's 518?

sopen

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a Waterman's made in USA pen that looks like it's never been inked and is in the box. Ideal, 14 K, 5A account nib. The plastic around the pen says:

518

ACCT

$5.80

F.E. TAX INCL.

It looks like a cheaper 40's-50's student pen, and needs a sac.

I cant find any info on 518 model-anyone have any insight?

Hi - any chance it's a poorly or overly keen stamping of 513 - which was a commonly produced pen from that period?

There’s no stamp I can find on the pen, the 518 is printed on a sticker that wrapped around the pen.

Hi All,

Thank you for your responses and thoughts--I've posted pictures above, and would be curious what might be revealed.

I just put a new sac in (though the old one was in great shape!). I've cleaned it to be safe, and it still appears to have never been inked. I'll put some ink in it tonight for the maiden voyage!

thanks for the pix. It may well just be a confusing coincidence that 518 appears on the sales sticker - a coincidence insofar as Waterman used a 5XX designation for one of their series of 1940/50s pens, but my suggestion would be that this 518 is possibly a sales reference No. only, and unrelated to anything from Waterman.

Unfortunately, your pix are what some folk call 'too busy' - nice to see some related paraphernalia or period kit, but at the end of the day it's the pen alone that we're interested in seeing - hope you won't feel offended by my comments - they're intended to help. :D

If possible may we see a photo of the entire pen capped - also a picture of just the cap showing the clip clearly …………… can't guarantee this is going to provide additional help, but caps and clips can sometimes offer answers to the guys here. Not all older Waterman pens carry barrel markings with model data etc., but it's unusual for a barrel to be without any marking. At least with the pristineness of this pen, then at least we can say that the absence of marks isn't because of wear :)

I was hoping you were going to show us a #8 size eyedropper with a solid gold overlay.

Sadly, your pen is about 1,000x less valuable, but I'm sure a great writer, since Waterman nibs were always exceptionally well made.

well, we all have to live with disappointment - we'll do the No. 8 e.d. next week ;)

thanks for the vastly improved pix, and glad it's a great writer ………. am sure Force knows what he's talking about - congratulations, it sounds a great pen though we may have to remain in the dark about the real meaning of No. 518.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
