Titanium Or Gold?

If you want flex, don't go titanium. A ti nib is not flexible. It is soft. It will bounce like a big 18k nib, giving you a lot of cushion in your writing. But it's very easy to spring if you try to get line variation out of it. I have an EF and I don't push it much beyond an M.

 

I personally prefer gold to titanium, but in a mid tier pen like a ranga, a Ti nib really is kind of the perfect pairing. So it's worth considering as an upgrade to steel, but I personally don't consider it a substitute for gold.

You might want to also consider one of Sheaffers' Palladium Silver (PdAg) nibs. Exquisitely soft and smooth to write with, gorgeous to look at and within your price range.

Sadly, I can't buy stuff from ebay. It's a bit complicated to explain but the result is that I don't have access to ebay products. This was actually my first thought on what to buy. I really like those vintage pens. I've very recently found and restored the fountain pen of my grandfather (a '50 pelikan 400) and the amount of flex I get from that EF 14K nib blew me away. I don't know if it categorizes as vintage flex, but it is a very wet writer that easily pushes from 0.5mm to 2mm. The need to buy myself a very flexible pen is pretty much gone now I ordered instead the pilot E95S to use as my everyday workhorse since it is very reliable and it is the most beautiful pen I have ever seen. It is a bit light though but I can live with that. Thanks for the suggestion though! I will definitely try to get my hands on one of these sometime.

I'd strongly advise trying a titanium nib before buying one, they are a very marmite experience - I hate them and I'm not alone, others love them. I've tried various sizes of Bocks, mainly on Conids, but I have also tried JoWo as well (who also now make them) and found their titanium nibs equally unpleasant.

well I have worked with some titanium dippennibs before but I guess that that experience differs a lot from a fountainpennib

Alas no clue - the one I tried was part of a limited set of Opus 88 Koloro with the nib installed. I tried one at a pen show and know some one who bought one of the pens, which i then tried again a few months later. I've just checked Fpnibs, plus the store who did the bespoke edition and neither have the nibs (or that version of the Koloro) listed.
