Is Lamy Safari A Fake?

I actually lost a Lamy Safari that someone gave me as a gift. I loved that pen so much that I simply had to replace it -- so I bought one off eBay for ~$25.

I was just watching some pen reviews on YouTube when I saw a video on identifying a fake Lamy Safari. There were a few "tests" -- whether the ink window lined up with the notch, whether the Lamy and the cross on the cap were very defined, and whether the cardboard protector ring had text on the inside and the outside. When I got the Safari, I saw that the cardboard protector ring only had text on the outside, and so now I'm wondering if I was sold a fake. It's hard to tell how defined the Lamy and cross are without a true authentic/fake next to it... can anyone tell me if this is likely a fake?

It seems legit to me. Which colour is the pen? Not easy to get the color from your pictures. The normal green should have a black ring, the pastel green LE a darker green ring. Looks like the pastel, though the pictures are unclear.

It should be pastel light blue it was advertised as 2019 special edition (though I really bought it for the EF nib)

Then it's legit. It is too early to have already fakes in such a new color. Moreover, it looks perfect. Enjoy your pen 🙂

If you had simply bought the pen from one of the many pen dealers who support FPN you might have spent five more dollars but there would not be any question about its authenticity.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

+1

especially on this occasion although, generally, the difference does tend to be fairly significant. An unfortunate reality.

Do you mean on the Classifieds section of the FPN website? I’d prefer to buy from a dealer, but I couldn’t find any EFs on classifieds. I get most of my pens from flea markets and yard sales and there’s no good pen shops near where I live.

Thanks so much for your help!!

I don't believe he does. He means a dealer such as Goulet Pen Co, Anderson Pens, Vanness Pens anong others.

I have a Safari (the powder-blue 2019 special edition) that I purchased directly from the Lamy San Francisco store. The cardboard protector ring had text only on the outside.

Enjoy your authentic Safari pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
