Favorite Townsend Finish

Have two Cross Townsend fountain pens both with medium nibs, and I like them both. The more treasured is the sterling silver (lined) with gold nib, and the other chrome also lined with steel nib. Obviously I prefer the sterling silver one, as I mainly collect sterling silver fountain pens. But since I like the Townsend I purchased the chrome Townsend to use outside, whilst I only use the sterling silver one at home, as I would not like to possibly lose it. :)

Dd you know that the nib making equipment and no how was sold by the Wearever Pen Co at Deer Lake, Pa in the early 1970's.. My friend traveled to Rhode Island and spent close to 10 days setting the equipment up and helping to train workmen.

Love to get a Lapis - where do they show up so I can get one?

The only place I've ever seen them is eBay, where you can usually find one or two available at any given time. But I suppose various dealers of older and/or used pens must get them in stock occasionally.

Greetings all,

When it comes to Cross pens; no matter the model, I'm an absolute sucker for their quintessential classic:

Satin black with gold trim.

Although the Medallist is stunning, too.

I have the black lacquer CT version with the two tone nib. I chose it because at the time it was the only one I could find with the two tone nib, which is a must. So I guess my answer would be any finish that comes with the two tone nib!

I was just looking at Townsends on Cross' site. All of the ones I looked at have steel nibs, but mind's 18k. Has Cross stopped making 18k nibs for these pens? Or am I just looking in the wrong place? I'm not interested in getting another, I'm just curious.

Good question. I have a couple and they both have steel nibs. I haven't seen one lately. I think a gold nib would have some indication on the nib.

Mine does- 18k/750 is stamped on it. It’s the two tone nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
