Seeking Advice About A Parker Duofold Check Amber?

I have an opportunity to purchase a NOS Parker Duofold Check Amber ( international size ) with a medium nib. I know this pen has been dipped for purposes of testing in store. I did not dip test the pen when I was looking at it. The seller is asking $695.00 which I view as slightly steep. I would definitely buy the pen if offered a discount and provided it wrote well. If presented with this opportunity what would you do?

It's a nice looking pen but I would be inclined to look around a little more and also see if you get a choice of nibs. You can see the listing of the MK III Check Internationals on parkerpens.net.

Considering that all the International Medium nibs/sections are going to write the same and you can get a plain black version for probably half that price, you have to ask yourself if you like the color/pattern that much.

If you do like the amber checked pattern, then only you can decide how much more you are willing to pay for it.

That seems a bit over the top price-wise to me. They are such well made pens that I would wait for a minty used one and would not wish pay more than $400 for that if I really loved it - and that's because I have seen them sell for even less than that. Eg I recently bought a mint used blue mosaic international for less than $400 and the blue mosaic is usually one of the costlier versions. I would recommend watching and waiting unless you can easily afford it and have to have it now in which case ignore everything I've said! :)

Hello Pennenut, I paid under $400. for the larger Duofold Centenniel Amber Check, new in the box, from Swisher Pens in the US. Sadly, that company is no longer in business. I agree with others that you can find a more reasonable price for the International Amber Check. Good luck.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
