What Is This, And What Do I Do With It?

It's been a long time since I had one of these threads. Dig around a bit, and you'll find them here in the repair forum.

So what is it, and what do I do with it? Don't bother looking at the file name, it won't give you any clues. :P

Hmmm. Looks like a cork hole cutter or an extractor of some kind, or a compressor for insertion. Looks familiar.

It could be used as a cutter or punch I suppose. But that's not what I use it for.

Hint - connected with a repair of pens made by a mid-west company.

Sorry, off to the Raleigh pen show, and I never had a chance to check back. We didn't get back until last evening. If you went to my seminar, you saw it in use....

Hint: Sheaffer - plunger fill pens.

Provided the edge is sharp and the diameter correct Ron could use this device to cut the head gasket from sheet rubber.

San Francisco International Pen Show - The next “Funnest Pen Show” is on schedule for August 23-24-25, 2024.  Watch the show website for registration details.

My PM box is usually full. Just email me: my last name at the google mail address.

My guess: When restoring the vac fill Sheaffers, you need something to push the piston rod from the open end up through the packing end. I use a small piece of hollow steel tubing that is just about the size of the nut on the ends. I could see this piece being used for that especially with the big blue end laying on a flat surface providing needed stability.

Please don't leave us hanging...

Ron said they were for Sheaffer Plunger fillers, I assume he means touchdown and Snorkels rather than Vac fillers.

Still not got a clue, not got anything like it in my plunger filler tool box?

You have that backwards.

The brass part of it shows wear from turning, with a nice thin ring of crud. Hmmmm....

I couldn't find the stupid thing after the Raleigh show. I had used it in the repair seminar, and then put it in a "safe place." I stumbled across it recently, but haven't had a chance to take a picture of it in use to post here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
