Mb Sterling Silver Solitaire Ballpoint

Hi,

I'm looking to buy one of the above (not an FP I know but I need a BP for work and don't see why I should rough itthing special - please don't hate me) and I'm after some opinions / feedback.

I don't particularly like the current Geometry or Martele finishes so probably looking for a used in either the Barley or Pinstripe finish. I'm not asking the "what's best" question as I know it's all subjective but given neither of these finishes are currently in production, that I'm aware of, I'll struggle to find one in the flesh so I'd value your opinions and preference, as well as the "why" if possible.

I'll probably go for the 164 / Classique size as it feels more comfortable in the BP range for me - though strangely I prefer the Le Grand RB..?

Appreciate your thoughts...

G

Hi,

I assume you are talking about this pen (I can't see your attached picture). The pen beside it is from Graf von Faber Castell's guilloche collection for comparison, which I would highly recommend as a daily beater. I picked the MB up just as it was being discontinued two years ago for similar reasons to you. I love the sterling silver and chevron design, but what really sold me was the MoP star on the top. I like a bit of weight in my writing instruments so I find the significant heft a plus. I am also a bit obsessive about scratches and I feel metal wears the light scuffs of daily use well. MB's resin pens, on the other hand, I feel look tired and spent if they are in anything but pristine condition.

As for less desirable traits, I would say the clip. I've always preferred the Graf's clip for day to day use. It is difficult to clip the MB to my shirt but that comes down to how you use the pen. In the same thread, it is difficult to operate the MB with one hand with ease. A more curious issue is that I find my writing more sloppy when I write with the MB. I suspect that it has to do with the pen's girth and possibly weight. I just find it difficult to write neatly compared to the Graf. I know some would regard this as a fatal flaw if it was their pen, but I remain enamoured with the MB. I love using it and would have no hesitation buying it again.

Hope that helps!

post-135369-0-92842700-1559908467_thumb.jpgThanks for the reply both.

PigRatAndGoat - your MB looks gorgeous, can I ask it the pen sterling silver or some other metal eg Stainless Steel? I'm luck enough to own a Jules Verne BP and it has the same wave pattern (for obvious reasons) but in blue, and I love just turning the pen and watching the pattern. (note to self - get out more :) )

Anyway, re the Solitaire I ended up opting for the pinstripe finish. It looks fantastic and I'm really happy, also as a "bonus" it's stamped W Germany which for me just adds that extra bit of... something.

Nice choice with the pinstripe.

To answer your question, my ballpoint is solid silver. This model was also rendered in solid rose gold; much too rich for my blood!

Don't overlook the Ramses and Czar Nikolai ballpoints or the citrine, hematite or carbon fiber. They are all really awesome looking too.

I have this "striped" pen as shown in the photo. Mine is genuine and bought it second hand for $100 years ago when a new one was about 600 I believe. . I truly like it a lot.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
