I found an unusual "Paper Mate" (correct spelling) ballpoint pen last week, and don't know what to make of it. It's not your usual Papermate, of which I have many. It's just over 5-1/2 inches long, and about 3/8 inch in diameter. It has a chrome pocket clip with 2 hearts on the very tip, a chrome "top cap" with 4 black plastic inserts, and an extended chrome fingertip section with 4 plastic inserts. The ballpoint cartridge is extended for writing by twisting the top cap (the black inserts on the cap and fingertip section simply provide a better grip). The black barrel has tiny white "sparkles" or glitter everywhere. The top cap is inscribed "Paper Mate" "Paper Mate" "USA". The cartridge is a fairly standard looking "Paper/2 hearts/Mate" "Med" "L5", and still writes nicely.

Can anyone help identify this ballpoint? See picture below.

I don't know anything about Paper Mate pens, but it looks like a nice find. For me most of the enjoyment comes from writing with a pen or pencil that is out of the ordinary. Enjoy!

Thanks very much for that information. The space between "Paper" and "Mate" almost made it look like a copy of a real Papermate. But I'm finding a lot written about it, now that you've identified it. Thanks for the help. This one's a keeper!

  • 2 weeks later...

Back when Paper Mate pens were pretty high in quality. Used to be my favorite pen brand growing up. Detested BIC pens. Now it feels like most Paper Mate pens I come across feel like they're cheap dollar store pens. Surprisingly, BIC seemed to gain my favor in recent years.

I no longer own any fountain pens... Now they own me.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
