Has anyone been charged duty/surtax in addition to HST on fountain pens bought in the US and sent to Canada via USPS by Canadian customs?

Yes in Canada, for a pen ordered from the US. There was a custom duty as well as a 'handling fee' or whatever it was.

So do look to order from some Canadian the government has already ripped off....and pay the higher price. Then one don't have to fiddle with customs.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Or go on the classifieds and see ads for Jinhao pens selling for $30 by a guy trying to make a quick buck off of an unlucky person's back :lticaptd: (laughing at the idiot who thinks it's a good idea to rip people off, he's been reported btw)

BTW: When I order anything from the UK, say from Cult Pens, I never get GST/HST taxes + handling charges slapped on the shipments. They seem to be delivered to my house, without charges.

But, if I order from Goulet Pens in the USA (from next door to us, if you will), I'll often get hit with the above charges.

Once I shipped my own pen (a Kaweco with a 14c nib) to Pendleton to have stubbed, a pen I paid for & been taxed for in Canada. On the pen's return, Pendleton honestly declared the replacement value of my gold-nibbed pen (in case of loss or...)

I had to wait a week longer than what the mail should take from Georgia. The tracking trail stopped at the clearing house at the Border. Sure enough, I paid close to 70.00 CAD to get my own pen out of our Post Office.

This is just one of many stories that I could tell of fountain pens & fly fishing equipment that has traveled across the Canada/US Border.

Just to rekindle this conversation... i have been looking forward to ordering Inks from Cult Pens and getting it delivered to my brother's place in Toronto, Ontario. How many times have you ordered from Cult Pens without needing to give any duties or charges?

Cult Pens pays the GST up front, you see it listed on their online order form when you reach the shipping screen and are just about to click "pay"  -- it's now actually less expensive to buy this way as there is no Canada Post/Border Customs handling fee. Until recently I've been successful buying from Vanness and Goulet without getting intercepted by Border Customs, but I think that was due to Covid 19 repercussions. My last two purchases have been intercepted. Cult Pens is looking much more attractive. Unfortunately, they don't always have what I'm looking for. Oh well..

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
